All things considered, I guess I don't need to worry about spoilers. So... Massa and Perez were both taken to the hospital to be checked out -- esp. fitting given the number of Gs absorbed there plus Perez' significant concussion at Monaco (I think?) and Massa's history -- and both were released. Here's the story, IMO. Perez was handed a 5-place grid penalty for the next race for causing the incident. Thoughts? I'm gonna go back to the DVR and look at it again a few times.
Stewards said of the penalty against Perez: Look at the very short video in this article (scroll down to find it) and tell me what you see. I do see Perez changing his line and moving left but it also looks to me like Massa turns even more drastically to the right, directly into Perez.
From what I saw watching the race I couldn't put the blame on Perez. But just now watching that helicopter shot Perez sure turns off line to throw the block it appears. Massa had a whole lap to get that pass, there was a high percentage it wasn't going to work. That being said I think both driver's caused this one. Glad both are OK, that was a hard hit for both driver's. Bet Vettel was surprised to see Massa cross his bow within an inch or so. Yikes!
Perez altered his line for certain, but Massa's move into him is much more radical. Hard to see how Massa can be held completely faultless.
That was very much worth watching. Although I did feel a bit deflated at the crash, I really wanted both of those two to finish well, just to stick their thumbs in the eyes of the teams that dropped them last year.
I assume most have heard that Adrian Newey signed a new contract with RB that will remove him from the role he now plays. Restrictive F1 rules fuelled Adrian Newey's decision to step down (sutosport.com)
Yeah, I saw Martin Brundle interview him briefly during his Grid walk, but the articles I saw were a bit less specific. So he's leaving but not leaving Red Bull and working and not working on F1. .... mmmkay....
Apparently the plan is to give him broader responsibility in Red Bull's various racing activities and maybe let him try his hand in the design of something else, maybe even something without wheels like racing yachts. Speculation is they gave him huge $ along with the contract in order to keep him from becoming available to competitors with deep pockets.
It will be announced tomorrow that Newey will be assisting in the design of Sir Ben Ainslie's AC62 for the America's Cup event in 2017.
What a great race! But even with the Mercs cripple it was hard to catch and pass them. If they're healthy, they'll win. It looks like Perez was holding up the Red Bulls a bit. They could touch him on the straights but they were better in the turns. Just not enough turns in Canada (C ay N ay D ay, heard if from a Canadian )
I looks like every one may end up going past their allocation. You'd think that when you introduce a totally new power package regulation, that is unlike anything else, you would reduce the number of units in the season as well. F1 wonders why TV ratings are down. :frown2:
I just watched my PVR recording of the Montreal race. When Hamilton's car broke down, the broadcast had cut to commercial. Too often when key events happen during a race, the broadcast cuts to commercial. When nothing in particular is happening, I get to listen to the commentators drivel on looking for things to say. I get the feeling the producer is not a racing fan. .. at least for the Canadian broadcasts.
Which is why I stream the races over the interwebs from a Sky TV pirate site (there are several and they move around as they get caught). Or otherwise acquire them later if I can't watch them live. The live streams are not HD, but there's no commercials. I'd gladly pay SkyF1 for the privilege of watching them legally, but alas, they aren't in the US.
The combination of additional scheduled rule changes plus Haas' decision to delay entry until 2016 means he has different options now. Dallara out, ? in. F1: Haas seeks tech alliance with F1 team (racer.com)
