Absolutely. But then which sport has its pinnacle occupied by shy unassuming modest competitors? And, pointing the finger the other way, would you even like them if they were? Actually I did just see ex-motorcycle racer Carlos Checa interviewed yesterday and I guess he is the 'exception that proves the rule'.
Pretty sure when the helmet goes on & the belts are pulled tight all racers are pretty much the same. Some are just better at it than other's.
I definitely agree. Even considered editing to that effect seconds after I posted and only left the F1 ref. because of the thread. I would prefer it if there were more 'shy unassuming modest competitors' and would likely cheer for them to outshine the most self-centered types. I love to see an egoist show his true colors making excuses and laying blame elsewhere when he loses. In fact, I just love to see an egoist lose to a modest competitor, never mind the excuses and blame-laying that comes after. Hard to get people like that in F1 or, as you say, the pinnacle of any sport because a person generally has to think highly of himself (and odds of success) to be convinced that it's worth the effort to go for the brass ring. Maybe even moreso, though, in F1 because performance in other driving series' isn't necessarily enough. It's not easy to get someone to pay you to drive his expensive car without both ability and interest in self-promotion.
16YO (I think he's still 16) Max Verstappen had his first publicity/demo run. I'm sure he meant to leave a better impression than this..... [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=293uG4Nr3KQ"]Max Verstappen Crash Rotterdam 2014 - YouTube[/ame]
