Congratulations to Joe Huffaker for another SCCA National Championship driving his 1967 Mini Cooper. Huffaker Engineering had a large group of well prepared cars at the Runoffs. The 2014 SCCA National Runoffs were held at Laguna Seca, Monterey, CA this past weekend. This was the first time since Riverside in 1968, 46 years ago, that the SCCA National Runoffs have been held on the West Coast. Over the 3 days there were 24 races consisting of 27 classes of cars and about 530 racers. Here is a link to some photos I took at the event: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ccmc_club/sets/72157648335861057/ The weather was great. Foggy to start on Saturday but Sunday was clear from sun rise. There were very few spectators, other than friends/family/crew of racers. I was surprised by the quality of cars at these "amateur" races. I know these were the national championships but most cars looked like cars you would see at any professional race. However, it was funny to see license plates on some of the cars racing.
I talked to Dean Case (a friend of a friend), who is Director of MazdaSpeed Motorsports, and he said sadly all those cars were being torn apart for inspections and will go home in crates. What a bummer to have so many protests. I believe the final results were: 1. 97 Erik Stearns 2. 11 Matt Schultz 3. 74 Matt Reynolds 4. 20 Jason Rawlins 5. 87 Will Schrader 6. 09 Rusty Dees The original top six that were protested were: 1. 10 Mark Drennan 2. 79 Andrew Carbonell 3. 12 Brian Ghidinelli 4. 88 Kyle Kaiser 5. 44 Tyler Kicera 6. 29 Jim Drago
Will be interested to see the turnout in Daytona in 2015. Look for me wearing my whites as a Corner Marshal
