So do you think Merc was sand bagging in the first 2 races? They wouldn't want to go all out because being that far ahead something may have been done to slow them down. Now that Ferrari has showed what it can do they turned the wick up to the true performance.

I watched the beginning, feel asleep in the middle, and woke up for the last 15 laps (tends to happen with most races). I thought I was dreaming when I woke up and Maldonado was still on track :confused5:

Alonso Buys a Mercedes
McLaren morale dropped again today with news that frustrated Fernando Alonso has bought himself a Mercedes engine.
‘Mercedes sell customer engines, so Fernando has become a customer,’ explained a source close to the Spanish driver. ‘It’s being delivered tomorrow and then he’ll insist the team fits it to his Mp4-30, even if it makes the engine cover a bit lumpy.’
The installation of a Mercedes engine to Alonso’s McLaren is certain to change the tone of radio messages the former champion relays to his pit wall during the race, moving from ‘there’s a funny noise and everything’s stopped working’ and ‘What do you mean save fuel? If I go any slower I’ll be stopped’ to more upbeat communications such as ‘It’s saying mode 2, could you look in the manual in my bag in the motorhome to see what I do next?’ and ‘There’s a blue light come on with, like, a picture of a desk fan or something, can you run down to the Merc pit and ask them what it might mean’.
Meanwhile, beleaguered Jenson Button has yet to follow his team mate in buying a Mercedes engine but is said to be more optimistic about his pace in the next Grand Prix having just picked up some Toyo R888s off eBay.

It does make you long for the good old days of F1, when any one could whip up an F1 car in their garage, beg some tires and oil sponsorship and go racing!
Lots of different engine styles, tire mfrs, chassis styles (6 wheels!) aero was just a smooth nose and tail and if a part got bent, you could straighten it and get back out on track.
Sheesh......I sound like one of those old farts!-

That was some save by Maldonado - slo mo says he was 45 degrees out of line at about 180 mph. A prize for the strongest sphincter muscle must be awarded....

I think a lot of credit for the various team's success and failure this weekend has to go to the track itself, this is not a horsepower track, it's a handling and high downforce track.
High speed cars like the Williams and Mercedes do not have as much benefit here, in fact the Williams was completely outclassed, where the cars with notably better chassis dynamics like the Red Bull, Ferrari and Honda (yes, I said that - both Button and Alonso have said all along the chassis was good, they just needed more oooomph.) showed well.
I think things will turn back again at Spa and Monza, two tracks that showcase high speed and low downforce setups. If Ferrari, McHonda and Red Bull are competitive with the Williams and Benzer boys there, then I'll agree they've turned the corner.......
However, I will say that Vettel drove a stupendous race, and did exactly what he needed to do to win, so well done Seb.-

I don't understand people are blaming Pirelli. The drivers were hopping the curbs all day. The tire could have easily sustained damage from something on the track especially on such a worn tire.
The only possible way to get a podium for Vettel was to take the 1 stop strategy, it was a risk and didn't work out. It sucks for him but that's racing.
And news flash...racing's dangerous.-

George Lucas needs to stick to making movies. His podium appearance was cringeworthy.
