That chart can be very confusing. I don't know why I didn't see it until now.

The numbers represent actual position numbers rather than number of positions gained or lost. In other words, if you start on pole and lose a position on the first lap the number representing your position in the field goes up from P1 to P2, therefore a +1 on the chart. Positive numbers represent moving backward on the first lap. Moving up from P18 to P15 => -3.

Yup, it's backward, poor chartsmanship. They should have switched the signs around to represent positions gained, would have made a lot more sense.

So, though it looks the other way around, this says Alonso and Hulkenberg gained more first lap positions than anyone else.

That's not hard to do when you're starting from last place! :blush2:

Yes, but how many of those place gains were due to other cars wrecking and dropping out? When you're in last place, you gain places anytime anyone ahead of you drops out, not true for the rest of the field that's ahead of Maldonado.... :biggrin5:

Caterham's administrators should be happy to have received permission to run their 2014 car in 2015. Might make it easier to sell the team if potential buyers know they won't have to pay to design and build a new car.

Though this is a 2015 design being revealed well in advance of its intended release, I don't imagine (given it's from Marussia) there are other teams spending hours poring over every detail, looking for secrets they can steal. :D

Still, it shows the sort of general front of the bulkhead and nose area shape we might expect to see on others as a result of 2015 rule changes.

21 races sure seems like a lot to me. I know it's only one more than the 20 on the original schedule but don't forget this year it was 19. Nineteen races in one year is a lot given they aren't all run on the same continent. We've seen what a season like that costs, and every additional race in another country means more logistical costs (and more parts, more fuel, more everything). Between the cost and the impact on the harder working personnel, I'm surprised someone isn't raising holy hell about the straw that broke the camel's back.

Plus, given the now known impact of power unit replacement penalties near the end of the 19-race 2014 season, 1 additional race ought to cause them to consider bumping up the limits a bit...I think 2 additional races makes this a no-brainer.

The 21st race was just to raise the engine allocation. Korea is not expected to hold the race.

The penalties for power unit infringements have been tweaked as well. Instead of starting from the pit lane, they'll just have a grid penalty. If the grid penalty cannot be served, they get five or ten seconds tacked on to their time, or a stop go, depending on how far back they qualify and how much of the grid penalty they can or cannot serve.

I like the idea of having a few seconds tacked on, it keeps people in the race, and above all does not have to ruin a driver's day. Much better than forcing a pit-lane start.
