Yeah, it looks like someone had the intelligence to make a F1 livery that looks good from a distance or on TV, rather than the usual ones that only look distinctive when you're standing next to them in a well-lit studio.

I see Ferrari decided to go with a mostly red livery this year...

That's one launch each year where everyone immediately focuses on shapes and form. No need to wonder what color the car will be, just which stickers are largest.

Toro Rosso launched their car today. I'm not paying much attention as the team have already said it's just an interim car and we won't see the car they'll take racing until either the third test or the first race. I suspect that's actually true of all them.

Vettel leads for Ferrari as Mercedes pile on miles - F1 Fanatic

Sebastian Vettel was quickest on the first day of testing for Ferrari but Mercedes impressed by covering almost 700 kilometres with their W06.

In stark contrast to the opening test day of last season, there were few major problems or stoppages suffered by the teams throughout the course of the day.

After the traditional early installation laps, Daniel Ricciardo became the first driver to set a lap time during the 2015 season with a 1â€™29.141.

There was a brief stoppage early on when Marcus Ericsson spun in the first sector, but the Sauber driver was able to keep the engine running and recover back to the pits and the session was quickly restarted.

It took just over an hour for the fastest time of last yearâ€™s Jerez test to be beaten, as Nico Rosberg posted a 1â€™23.106 during a run in the second hour where he consistently lapped the W06 in the 1â€™23s.

In the second hour, we saw the first look of Fernando Alonso in the McLaren-Honda MP4-30. The two-time world champion completed a successful installation lap before returning to the garage and only made brief, single-lap appearances during the mid day.

Next it was the turn of Valtteri Bottas to take the new FW37 out in public for the first time. With Lotus announcing that the E23 would not arrive until later in the day, that meant that all seven cars had now taken to the track.

Just like in 2014â€™s opening test, Rosberg and Mercedes began to ominously log lap after lap in their new car, running comfortably longer and quicker than the opposition.

It wasnâ€™t until after the lunchtime lull that other teams began to push. Vettelâ€™s Ferrari and Bottasâ€™s Williams both rejoined the circuit to put in quick times to get within a second of Rosbergâ€™s benchmark.

With just over three hours remaining in the day, Rosberg had already completed his 100th lap. No other driver had even managed a third of this total by this stage of the day.

Despite running the fewest laps of anyone bar Alonso, Vettel suddenly set the fastest time for Ferrari, becoming the first driver to breach into the 1â€™22s. Daniel Ricciardo set a purple first sector on the way to setting the third fastest time, before Vettel shaved two tenths off of his fastest time.

Compared to the many headaches teams suffered during the opening day of last seasonâ€™s testing, there was little disruption to the on-track action. Only with an hour to go did Carlos Sainz Jr bring out the second red flag of the day after his STR10 ground to a halt on the circuit.

When the session restarted, Marcus Ericsson made a surprising jump up to second fastest with a 1â€™22.777 to be within a tenth of the ultimate pace. In the final half an hour, Vettel then shaved a further half a tenth off his fastest time.

I ignored the rumors I read the last few days that the RB was going to be revealed in zebra livery. Assumed that was as nuts as it sounds. Does anyone think they're going to race like that as well?

Read an interesting comment from Adrian Newey pointing out their relationship with Renault was closer than ever, strengthened by the fact they're now the only customers (RB & STR being the same big group). I suppose that means everything Renault did to improve their engine may have been almost scripted by RB.

The team that wins the first day of the first test of the season isn't the one with the best lap time, it's the one with the highest lap count.

Haas F1 2016 aero testing underway (racecar-engineering.com)

The Haas F1 team has already started its aerodynamic programme according to team owner Gene Haas. A 60% scale model of the new teams 2016 design has already been run in Ferrariâ€™s wind tunnel in Maranello, Italy. â€œOur model is in the wind tunnel at Ferrari right now, we are working in collaboration with Dallara on that, they are making some parts for the model there in Italyâ€ Haas told Racecar Engineering.

The North American team has its own facility in North Carolina but is currently reconfiguring the former Marussia F1 facility in Banbury, England in order to suit its needs. â€œWe took possession of the facility in Banbury a couple of weeks ago. We are reconfiguring that to meet our needs at the moment and we have just finished the place at Kannapolisâ€ Haas continued.
The team which will use Ferrari power units is as stated also working closely with Dallara and Ferrari.

Despite acquiring the Marussia factory (as exclusively revealed by Racecar Engineering & the Banbury Guardian last year) Haas denies that he has acquired the 2014 Marussia chassis.

â€œRight now we are looking at buying our haulers and getting the equipment in place and getting organisedâ€ he explained. â€œThe final car probably wonâ€™t get built until December, and we wonâ€™t start final production until late summer.â€

Both of these videos sound like the audio has been compressed badly, introducing artifacts and weird distortion.

I'm not sure that it really is poor audio quality, or that's just how the Honda sounds, but it certainly is different.

Testing today remains bad for McLaren. JB's only done 5 laps so far.

From the Beeb:

"The long delays at McLaren are rooted in the car's packaging - on a design described as 'quite extreme, quite aggressive, quite innovative' by Fernando Alonso on Sunday. The team thought they had fixed overnight the problems that hit Alonso on Sunday but the same problem recurred for Jenson Button on Monday morning. The part in question - the identity of which McLaren will not reveal - is buried so deep in the car that it is taking a lot of time to get at it and fix it. But a spokesman said the team were 'quite positive we've sorted the problem'.
"Meanwhile, 'aggressive' would also be an apt word for Honda's approach as it prepares for its return to F1. The Japanese company will have different engines at the next test than the one that is in the car now, and then different engines again at the last test - the race engines. These last ones will incorporate every single modification made on the previous two versions. Honda needs to homologate its initial design with the FIA by 28 February, but will have some development still available during the season."
