He's only 21 points back. It is more than possible to take over 2nd.
There are still 7 races left in the season.

The thing is, at the beginning of the season, they were 30 sec back over a race distance, today they were just over 25 sec back - not really a lot of progress, is it?

No not a lot, but I'm sure Ferrari thought they were close. I feel like Lewis sand bagged a wee bit in Quali. What a shock it must have been for Vettel to see Lewis blast off & not be seen again until the podium ceremony.

Some of them have been pretty good actually, but I agree some have been cringe worthy. I think poor George was overwhelmed by the noise from the fans and didn't know how to overcome them.

Exactly my point......the others have improved, but so has Mercedes....and bringing their next year's engine out half a season early is a real slap in the face to the other teams.

Horner called the performance of Merc's new engine, as seen in first Friday practice at Monza, "scary." This was before, as most suspect, Merc dialed it back a bit. After watching that go down Horner and others at RB will be especially disappointed to have learned Merc are not willing to supply RB with engines in 2016.
Rumor has it RB have already sent the necessary documentation to Renault to terminate their contract at the end of this season. If true, Merc's announcement not only forces them to look elsewhere for 2016 but leaves them with only Ferrari and Honda to choose from...or exiting F1. -
I heard SKY mention that Renault is on the verge of buying Lotus as their works team.

I would think so judging from how Lewis was able to run away so easily. I'd also be the part of the cooling system that failed will be replace on both cars. Maybe the streets will suite the red cars better.

Is anyone watching the GP2 races? They have been pretty good this year.

Maybe slap in the face didn't accurately convey what I was trying to say - "wake up call" may be more accurate - the point being that as much as they have done, they're no closer than they were, and may be even further away.
Merc may easily be on top next season too......which is why Bernie is pushing for such radical changes for the 2017 season. -
I would think that all the engine suppliers are trying with everything they have but it is not a trivial task, especially if you consider the F1 rules on upgrading and testing. -

Yes should have used one of these....
