Smog is a regular problem in Southeast Asia caused by land and forest fires in Indonesia, especially Sumatra and Kalimantan, although the term haze is preferred in describing the problem.

    Rosberg determined to almost win

Posted in Motorsport, News by Sniff Petrol on Friday, September 11th, 2015

Despite a disappointing DNF in last Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix, Nico Rosberg says he remains ‘totally focussed’ on coming second in the 2015 drivers’ championship.

‘I did it in 2014, and I know that if I keep my mind on the prize, I can be the second placed driver again this season,’ the German-Finnish-Monegasque driver insisted in a new interview with Every Other Sunday online. ‘I mean, I don’t want to sound boastful, but I truly believe that I am one of the second best drivers in Formula 1 right now.’

‘For sure, getting to stand on the second step in the world championship is partly down to luck,’ the Germ-Fin-Mongoose racer admitted. ‘But sometimes you make your own luck. It’s in my hands to make the disappointing start, to spend too many laps failing to overtake a slower car, to get on the radio and moan about everything, and for sure I know I can do these things.’

Rosberg denied that in his fight to be almost the winner of the F1 title he looks to the racing achievements of his father, such as third place in the 1985 world championship. ‘It’s not something I think about because, you know, my dad had good times and bad times too,’ the Germo-Finlandic-Monocoque driver insisted. ‘I mean, this one season he was first place in the championship. God, I hope that never happens to me!’

It's so unhealthy right now that officials in Indonesia are talking about cloud seeding to try to scrub the air clean.

Yes, and just to keep things in perspective - there are 12 wildfires burning in California right now, people have lost their homes and everything they own and are fleeing for their lives.....

My sister's home in Volcano is now in the path of one of those fires and the wind just shifted overnight - directly at them....along with the historic town of Sutter's Creek, with all it's magnificent Victorian homes built during the goldrush of the 1800's.

I'm not so concerned about a little car race in Singapore now.....

Here's how it looks to those who live(d) there....

And they aren't wasting a bunch of time and money helping the Indonesians develop an economy that's not dependent on slash & burn agriculture.

    Yep.

I got good news from my sis just now, winds have dropped off completely and the fire has stopped advancing her direction now - fingers crossed.

I'll stop hijacking the thread now - back to Singapore!

Continued good luck to your sister & all folks in harms way Dave. Things like this make all the other stuff seem quite insignificant.

If Renault buys Lotus but doesn't develop engines any more what are they going to power the cars with? Some how I don't see one of the other 3 supplying engines. May they mean they are only going to do their own engines.

On top of that, they won't be supplying any other team with engines unless they unleash the mother of all F1 packages - with their last two years performance, I doubt any team would take them for free let alone pay for them unless they just couldn't get a motor anywhere else.

I'll bet Haas is doing the happy dance that they hooked up with Ferrari at the start of their F1 effort, at least they have a shot.

Imagine if they'd gone with Honda or Renault instead?

Isn't the sale of engine packages a big part of what helps a manufacturer offset their costs?

Rossi to replace Mehri at Manor for most of the remaining races this season. I'm guessing this should say something like "...unless Mehri ponies up more cash" but for now it looks like there will be an American on the back of the grid, and that includes COTA.

I know Haas said they wanted an experienced driver, but if Rossi does well in these last 7 races they would be short sighted not to consider him - an American driver in an American F1 team might generate some interest and sponsorship here in the HewHessHay.......

Yes, but I assume they're looking for someone who both can drive well and has already demonstrated ability to help develop current F1 cars. Add to that the likelihood they're going to have to give one seat to one of Ferrari's reserve/developmental drivers (looks like Gutierrez) and I'm sure they'll be looking for the other driver to have at least one full year driving in F1 under his belt. Will they compromise a bit to get a rookie American? Maybe, if they don't luck into a more seasoned option. They said recently the main goal is to do well quickly so they may be prioritizing rapid development over other types of good publicity. Rossi might be able to help to that end but there's no evidence yet.

This morning before I read the Rossi announcement I was thinking they might end up with Magnussen. Most current drivers have already signed to stay where they are and if McHonda don't use him to replace Button or Alonso for next season...plus he's already been quoted saying he'd like to drive for Haas...and McHonda have already said they wouldn't stand in his way so maybe they're already talking about it.

Whoa, I didn't know Rossi was so tall. Here he is with his new teammate Will Stevens. At 6'1" he might be the tallest driver in F1, I hope the Manor car has legroom.

I think so. But Ghosn has been consistent in saying if they stay it will be as a racing manufacturer and not an engine supplier. I'm paraphrasing and he used different words in two different interviews I read but despite the exact wording his meaning came across the same in both. They probably figure even the expense of running a team will be worth more to them as an investment given the bad press they get as an engine supplier only. Maybe (and this assumes they stay at all) they'll change their minds if they start doing well and customers come knocking.

"One thing is certain, we are no longer able to stay with the current configuration: when we win, it is the team that wins; when we lose, it is the fault of the engine manufacturer."

Manor putting Rossi in the car may give some teeth to the rumor that another American money man may be buying the team.

Haas at the beginning that he was going to put an experienced guy in with an American. I'm disappointed that he isn't following through.
