I've had 2 CRX Si's both 91's with the rear disk brakes, and loved them both. They where light, had decent power, a decent chassis/suspension from the factory... Honda doesn't build stuff like those anymore unfortunately! When the EP chassis came out, even though it had a "better" engine (K20) the cars themselves became heavy, behaved like limp noodles, and got crammed with the "new tech" stuff thats killing off MINI's. Then when they do make a car I would actually take a look into, its for outside of the US only. Why car manufacturers cant make a decent performance car without all the tech, and weight, then bring it here SUCKS!
My '86 CRX Si was why I bought my MINI. It was one of my favorite cars and I wanted something like it. Small, light, and nimble. It that time there were only 3 Honda tuners. Mugan, Jackson, and Light Speed. I had parts from all 3. Plus I got the brakes from a wrecked Integra and transplanted them. Now that car could stop.
The 1st generation CRX was nice, but the second gen's where the best thing short of an NSX that Honda sent to the USA... Little known fact: the guy who designed the suspension for the NSX, also designed the suspension on the CRX. Those cars are the reason I wanted a MINI too.
Had an ’88 Integra and a ’89 Civic Si that were daily drivers/autocross cars. Raced SCCA in ITA Class in both 1st and 2nd generation CRXs – those were the days. Was nearly heartbroken when I sold my ’89 Civic Si. It was 13 years old with +199K miles on it. I waited for the new 2002 Civic Si and like previously mentioned, was severely disappointed. The CRXs and my generation of Civics had a soul; now Hondas feel more like an appliance. While I’ll be interested to see the latest iteration, I’m at that stage in life where utility is becoming paramount as I begin downsizing with an eye on retirement. Thinking that this MINI is the last hurrah for small, sporty toys. Next up in a couple of years: Subaru Crosstrek, I think.
The Subi CrossTrek would be cool if they wrapped the body around a WRX like the older Forester XT... Instead no higher performance version, just some awful looking hybrid.
I still have an 88 Integra. Only my younger son and I love that car, the rest of the family think we are nuts. The CRX was a great car
And it looks like the type R is coming to the U.S. after all, at least according to the article in USA Today this morning out of the New York autoshow. Next generation though.
Not sure how they are going to market a US Type-R to 5 year olds though... Maybe Super Man and a .5 second flash of the actual car again!
Fastest lap time on the ring for a stock front wheel drive car. That gets me on board... This car is a beast. The looks may not appeal to everyone, but neither do STi's. This car will have a substantial waiting list IMHO, especially when you consider it's the first on in the U.S, and there was a write in campaign to get it here. This was the one last car I was waiting on, and I didn't think it was coming here. I might of waited if I knew for sure it was, although it won't be here anytime soon. Too late now, I've gone mental on the MINI, which when it's all said and done what I probably would've done anyway.
