DURR Ryephile's guide is helpful!
I could possibly throw a 235/40/17 in there too.. most likely would rub though on a R53.

As for the first question.....lots of local folks run the 215/45 on 7" wide wheels with no disadvantages and it actually fills in the gap a bit too.

I have a pair of Star Spec Z1's currently (215/40/17) and I love them.. a tad bit loud, but nothing to cry about for their performance.
I was kinda looking to try something different, but for their price (60 bucks less per tire) compared to their competition - it is kind of hard to argue with.
A question has come about though. On tire rack it states that the 215/40 is wider than the 215/45. Kind of odd and mike make me stick with another set of 215/40's -

Would depend on a car I guess. I run 215/40/17 on 7.5 which barely clear. Doubt 215/45 or 225/40 would fit.

I am tempted to say 42, but would need to check.

I run 215/45/17 Star specs on a 17x7.5" wheel, R53 lowered with TSW springs. Tires used to rub, especially with a passenger or over bumps, but the fender liner is worn away now so it's fine. Not sure what offset - Kazera KZ-B's. Comfy ride, plenty of grip. I run higher tire pressures at the track to compensate for the extra sidewall, and the car's slower off the line than with smaller tires. I have a set of crappy all seasons that I run when it snows (I live in NC, so once or twice a year) and they're much quicker at 205/40/17.

Somehow I don't have any photos online of the current setup. Guess they're all on my home computer. I'll walk out to the parking lot later today - my boss bought pitchers at lunch, so getting work done isn't exactly a priority today. =)
If you want less noise, get some Bridgestone RE-11's. Look at the price difference - the extra cash will get you 4% better performance and 40% quieter ride. -

That's why I'm on my second set. =)
It's about a half-finger gap in the back and 1.5 fingers in the front. -

I am on 215/40 and have no gap in the rear. Thus no 215/45.

I'm running Kozei TS K1 wheels, 17x7's with Z1 Star specs in 215-45-17. Great combo for autocross. But, I'm thinking of getting a wider tire next. I've read other posts but hoping someone might post their most recent experience. I'm thinking of 225-40-17's or 235-40-17's of some comparable brand to the Z1's. I found a few posts claiming success with both sizes...just wondering if anyone are currently running these. Not really interested in new wheels right now either but I can go to a 7.5" or 8.0" wide wheel late next year. I'm staying in the STX class for autocross.

Yup, KZ-B. Kazera is distributed by Tire Rack and made in the ASA factories in South Korea. I don't think they make these particular wheels anymore, but they're a knock off of the PIAA FR-S wheel, which is much nicer and more expensive. There's a great pic of those wheels on NAM but I'm not gonna link there right now.
Kazera hasn't taken the wheel page off its website but they don't show up on the home page anymore.
And yeah, they look easy to clean, but there's a "polished" ring behind the spokes that looks cool but picks up brake dust like nobody's business. It's basically unpainted aluminum, and it's currently pitted as heck. When I win the lottery I'm gonna have them stripped and powder coated.
