1st Gen R53 Cooper S 2nd MAP sensor replaced....

    So the MINI went into limp mode again yesterday. Babied it to the shop and got a call that the other MAP sensor had failed.....:mad:. Just had them replace the other one a few months ago. Wish I had just had them replace both at the same time considering the shop rates.

    Oh well, at least now I can drive it..:biggrin5:

    Yeah that sucks. I have a spare set that I keep on hand just in case along with a spare O2.
    2 screws and a clip is all you need to replace them and it only takes 10 min tops.

    I just wish I had the means to verify that indeed the sensor is bad instead of just replacing parts hoping that is what needed to be done. Can't seem to trust the scan gauge to tell me......lol

    You could swap them, they are the same and see if the code changes.

    Already got the new one being put in. Anyone have a definitive fault code for the map sensor?

    I keep my maps in the door pocket, I don't need a sensor to find them. :D

    Yea well I have one of those cool new GPS thingy's..........only problem I have with it is that it is a pain to fold after using it.

    I thought one was a MAP and the other was a T-MAP? Didn't know you could swap 'em.

    Op's, Your right, I was thinking O2 sensors. I have replaced one of those, will look back to see what I did. :blush2:

    The MAP sensor is used to measure the amount of air being pulled into the engine in order to determine the amount of fuel needed. A MC has one, a MCS has two. these are also used to measure barometric pressure, and each also has a temperature sensor measuring the temperature of the incoming air. The engine computer is able to calculate the density of the air from these inputs, and meter in the proper amount of fuel. A set of oxygen sensors sit in the exhaust stream after combustion to measure remaining oxygen, then this information is also used by the engine computer to precisely trim the amount of fuel. When the MAP (or TMAP, for temperature and manifold absolute pressure) sensor fails, the computer has to make a determination if the sensor is giving false information. If it is, the computer will 'ignore' that sensor and make calculations based on other sensor inputs to best approximate how to deliver fuel. This is not always perfect, and in the case of intermittent sensors, the computer will switch from reading the sensor to ignoring it with an attending hiccupping in performance. Either way, the ECU will shine the check engine light and store a code or two to alert the driver and the tech as to what is going wrong.

    I have an 2004 standard mini. I had code P1109. I replaced the MAP sensor. The service engine light still goes on and off intermittently. Does the standard mini cooper also have a TMAP sensor? Drives ok, just loses power when coming to a stop.

    BOTH sensors are T-MAPs....just the temp portion on the cold side is not used on a r53...
    On a r50, the sensor is utilized as a t-map.... The coldside map/t-map is the same as the r50 part...

    Bentley manual has a diagnostic section you might want to try. I was able to back probe a bad sensor, replaced and all went well. Those things aren't cheap.
