im currently waiting on the shop to figure out the alarm and popper wiring so i was trying to figure out what i can use to "shave" the bumpers.
-
I read about using aluminum tape on the back and filling with 3M panel adhesive

So tomorrow morning will start at the junkyard looking for the rubstrips for my gti. Not to put back on the car but to use as a template for the metal to fill where the rubstrips ate supposed to go. Hopefully I can get something welded by the shop this week with pics.

Got my rubstrips that I needed. Now to use them as a template for the metal to be cut. My first show with the car is on the 10th and I know it won't be ready but I want to do as much as possible.

Just curious, why the need for templating the rubstrips, is it because they have a shape to them? The depressions look straight. Couldn't you just measure the depression and have a local sheetmetal shop shear a few strips for you?
Looking for them pics... -

That's what I thought he was going to do too.....:confused5:

The ends on the quarter panels have a bit of a bow to them and the fenders kinda curl. The reasoning behind the templating is to make the metal the same size as the strip and not the recess in order to allow the welding bead to sit flush. (minimal bondo hopefully)
I was to busy to get to the shop today before work but should be able to make it tomorrow. -

So my mechanic and body guy took the car home to work on it. Lets see how fast it gets done now.

Good news is the welding of the driver side should be done today... Then the body work can be finished once the wiring is done.
