the paint for my bike was the same. A Friend now wants me to paint his drag bike candy apple red. The bike has a small front and rear finder. the cover that looks like a gas tank is small too. He paid a little over $200 for the paint. I am not sure I want to the the chance of screwing it up at that price.
A friend owns a high end paint and restoration shop, he says that just the paint and supplies for a complete repaint cost six or seven thousand dollars.
Guess I'm old the last car I painted cost me $30 a gallon for single stage paint. Base coat clear coat wasn't a thing yet. No waterborne paint systems either. Things were different 35 years ago.
Yes, they were. If he would have been happy with a "standard" color I could have done it in single stage enamel for $20 in materials, but he wants this special color so we're going this route. I'm not a painter, so I may have a buddy who is come shoot it for me. I don't want to screw it up and have to start over, but I got enough paint that I can if I do mess it up.
Here's what the cans look like.... and here's the bottom where you insert the red cap to push the hardener into the color..... another paint store wanted to sell me the individual paint components and a reusable little electric powered sprayer (which costs $8.00 ?!?!) but the total cost was more than the 4 spray paint cans - might have been easier to use tho, as I could have mixed up a little at a time instead of shooting everything at once. It says on the can in very tiny print that the pot life is 8 hours once you inject the hardener - which is quite a bit longer than I expected, so if I get an early start I should be OK. My painter buddy says you want to shoot the color over the epoxy primer before it cures out or it won't stick. This whole thing will be a good adventure in learning.
Yes, well that's going to be a problem......finding one! Unless I buy an expensive actual respirator. The paint store said if I was painting outside that I could wear a regular N-95 mask, if indoors I'll need something better. I have a little time yet, as I still don't have the block and head back yet.
Even after you are paining that stuff will give off fumes until it is cured. I had a very bad adverse reaction to that hardener once. Not fun, protect yourself. On second thought let your friend who is a painter shoot it for you. He has the right gear.
I used the same spray cans for painting. Don’t be fooled by the size of the can, it does not last that long when painting. I agree 100% if you do not have a fresh air mask let your painter buddy do it for you.
+1 on having the correct equipment. If it's still like when catalyzed paints first came out, that stuff actually has cyanides in it that can enter your body through your mucous membranes, eyes, fingernails, and possibly skin. At paint and body school we were told a full suit with a hood, gloves, and full face mask (like a firefighter) attached to a fresh air supply unit outside of the spray booth was required for these paints. They also said the cyanides never leave your body and at a certain point you'll reach a level of toxicity where any more exposure could put you over the edge.
You are thinking about two part polyurethane paints the components are polyol and isocyanate. Breathing concentrated epoxy fumes will make you sick and can cause epoxy sensitivity in which any amount of epoxy fumes will make you sick all over again. It happened to a friend, who was a boat builder, he restored an indian log canoe and breathed the fumes that had settled into the bottom of the canoe. He quit boat building after that. You could get a respirator with the proper cartridges for epoxy. You don't need a fresh air mask. Just be sure you spray epoxy in a well ventilated area and you'll be alright.
I was thinking out in the backyard would be the right place.... The paint place said an N95 mask and outdoors would be fine, just don't get your face down in the spray.....
I'm hopeful this week things will get going again on this build......both the cylinder head and block should be back to me by mid week, and the last few parts I ordered 10 days ago now should also be here by Friday - things have really slowed down in the shipping world. I understand that FedEx has warehouses full of packages and UPS is running as much as a month behind on deliveries..... DHL has gone from their usual 3 days from England to me to more than a week. I'll actually be surprised if the parts get here on Friday. I also had the header ceramic coated, and I'm eager to see how it turns out. I asked the owner if he wanted black, grey or silver and he chose gray as the other two were "too plain", when I got to the coaters they offered black, silver and one other color - NOT grey. So I made an executive decision and it will be "not plain"! We'll see later this week on it too......
Cylinder head came back today, a few days earlier than I thought it would. Next I need the block....I ran a tap into every threaded hole, even the spark plug holes. Now I need to clean it up and tape it off to get ready for paint.
The block came back today from the machine shop, so now I need to do a lot of clean up and tape off to get ready to paint all the bits.... The header will be done at the ceramic coaters tomorrow, and I still have a few bits left up at the powdercoater's to pick up, then I can get fully stuck into putting it all together after the paint cures out for a week or so. I'm also thinking about getting one of those pop up tent things so I can have some shade while I'm painting in the back yard.
Transmission is now fully built, I need to work out how to seal it off as the owner wants it painted to match the engine..... I also got the rest of the bits back from the powder coaters. I took this header out to have it ceramic coated - the owner said any color except silver or black, he was thinking grey but I chose this - a metallic bronze. I think it looks a lot like the Inconel SS used in F1 - and the owner liked it! The color is actually darker than it appears in these photos - I took them out in the sun so the color would show better.....the green on the paint can is the color that will be used on the engine. Next up I need to do a lot of final cleaning and tape off/seal up all the openings. Then I'll set up some Workmates in the back yard - I also bought a 10X10 pop up tent thingy to maybe keep the sun off me while I'm painting. It's really hot these days. It's supposed to rain Friday so I'm planning to paint on Sat. so I mowed the grass today and I'm spraying bug killer today to knock down the flying nits population.
