My prayers to you and your family, you are doing the rigth thing. It doesn't make any easier because you and your family will face the difficult situation that comes along cancer and only who pass through it knows.
I move to US in 2001 in February and my Dad died of cancer 3 days of my arrival, I couldn't go back to his funeral. He was terminal but we didn't expect that was going to be so quick and unexpected.
My mother in law died in 2009, she stayed almost 1 year half in a hospital bed after diagnosed with a brain cancer. The most remarkable about this is the fact that my wife and her Mom in 2009 were in the same hospital but for different reasons. One was in the cancer area and the other was in the maternity. So Izabella born in January 2009 and grand mother died 2 days later, they were so close and they never meet each other. There is things you can't explain, because everything was so hard on my wife, and Izabella for six months only eat and sleep. In th emost difficult time of my wife's life the new born come just to bring joy and confort.
The cancer situtation can be bring a family together or sometimes tear them apart, one thing I can tell you by experience is concentrate on the person that facing the problem and try as much as possible to look in the quality of life of the person that is sick. Theres is nothing like the person feel surround by family and being loved.
Just to conclude, and share that situatons are different in a case basis:
My Dad lived with cancer home and surrounded by family.
My Mother in law lived in a hospital bed, doing chemo and radio teraphy.
The same outcome they are not here anymore, my Dad at least on his batlle had more quality of life on his last years here on this earth.
I know this doesn't change anything but I hope it maybe give you and your family some confort and strength to face what life is bringing you.
With all my respect,
Murilo-
