Welcome to MA! It is hard to tell from the video and the speakers on my lap top. But it sounds like an air leak. Can you get to a parts store to check for codes? The first thing I thought was lose plug. I have had one blow out of the head. Lucky for me it was lose so it did not damage the threads. I would check all the hoses, check the pulleys (The stock crank pulley is two pease and has rubber in between the inner and outer parts) I don't think thats it but make sure. If you can get some cheep tools pull the valve cover and check the rockers. I am very glad it does not sound like the SC. Let us know what you find maybe we can be more help. Sorry I did not see this till today. I have spent the last two days doing a clutch on my sons Mustang. I don't know why I put long tube headers on that car!:frown2:
Could be timing chain tensioner and the 2 plastic guides. Hope everything works out for you. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I just watched your video a few times and it sounds like the two thing above or the belt tensioner. I did have a sound like that before and it was the bushings on the little black shock on the tensioner fell out. The sound came from the metal to metal tapping on the post it mounted to without the bushing. Replaced tensioner with new one problem solved. Here is the part I am talking about. http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/MINI/09-ENGINE-Belt_Tensioner_Replacement/images_large/Pic24.JPG http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/MINI/10-ENGINE-Belt_Tensioner_Stop/images_med/pic01.jpg Instruction here : http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/MINI/09-ENGINE-Belt_Tensioner_Replacement/09-ENGINE-Belt_Tensioner_Replacement.htm You can buy the replacement tensioner on Amazon and will need the belt tool to remove and install the belt. Thanks everyone for the replies. There were really no sources for Mini parts in Elko, Nevada. Everything needed to be special ordered, so even if I could find somebody who could or would work on it, there were no parts for them to fix it. I finally got a U-Haul truck and trailer in the afternoon, so I took off for Salt Lake City. I had talked to an independent mechanic there who was going to try to take a look at it. I wasn't going to get there before he closed, and he said it could take 1 to 2 days to evaluate and make repairs. As such, I made the decision just to trailer it to my home in Colorado. In addition to spending a money I had not planned on, I am not making money because I am missing work. Once I get home I can take my time to figure this out and fix it or find a someone who can. And without paying an outlandish price for parts. The mini dealer in Salt Lake wanted $288 plus expedited shipping just for a timing chain tensioner. I found a video on the Mod MINI channel on YouTube that sounds just like mine does. I am not sure if the guides are damaged, but at this point I believe the timing chain tensioner is a good place to start. On a different note, does anybody know who the guy on the model any channel is? Is he a member of this site? Thanks again for all the assistance and information. I will keep you guys updated as things progress.
Sorry you have to trailer it home! Let us know what the fix is. For parts we have a lot of great sponsors.
On a different note, does anybody know who the guy on the Mod Mini channel is? Is he a member of this site? AutoCorrect is going to be the death of me!
Nope don't know him. You should not text and drive in the middle of the night............auto correct my a$$ Good luck on the drive home.
I stopped at a hotel last night; texting and driving is too risky. I got an iPhone 6 Plus so it would be easier for me to read the screen and not fat finger the keypad. I still end up using voice to text most of the time, and apparently I don't speak very clear, because things don't end up even close to what I tried to dictate.
Start with the tensioner and you should replace the belt tensioner also for piece of mind, both are items that go bad over time. If the noise goes away and then comes back in a couple days, then move to the guides. They can be pulled through the top of the head, but make sure you don't screw up the timing of the cam. At this point you can assume you'll have to pull the oil pan to clean out the plastic pieces that broke away from the guides. Good time to replace leaking gaskets and o-rings.
I got a 6+ for the same reason. Old farts need big phones. Once you get it home and find the problem let us know. The R53 is a great car. It is easy to mod and can take a lot of power. There some things you need to look out for and fix early. Here are the things I would consider looking at and doing. New belt, belt tensioner, idler pulley, and if the crank pulley has cracks in the rubber I would replace it with an ATI damper. Check the lower control arm bushings if they are stock they are toast by now. Replace them with Powerflex bushings they will last the life of the car. Oil pan gasket and O-rings. as has been said. I have done all this to my 02 R53. Pictures of your new Mini are welcome, and by the way you said you had a FJCW. What is a FJCW...Fun JCW...Fancy JCW...or could it be For Uncardnel Knowledge JCW.
fJCW The F stands for factory JCW. Which in 2002 - 2006 they did not make any. All first gens are not factory JCW's because JCW was a dealer installed option not a factory option. JCW was an add on company, like Shelby is to Ford. Since then JCW has been bought by MINI and is now is nothing really more than special stickers and a little bump in a tune.
Dave, I know you are much more knowledgeable about Minis than I am, but I was under the impression that in 2006 customers could order and have the JCW package installed at the factory. (I found NAM before I found this site.) The BMWVIN.com website has been updated in the last several days and is no longer working for me. Car now has a name! On another note, I understand that there is a tradition requiring owners to name their Mini(s). I have owned many vehicles over the last 34 years, and I have never given one a name or gender reference. That said, I had an 850 mile road trip with the car hiding on a trailer behind the U-Haul truck to think about it (among other things). I have combined Mini and Disturbed into a new word - Misiturbed (my first official contribution to the English language). But I am going to refer to her as MISTRBD. Mini is obvious, but disturbed you ask??? Well is was rather disturbing to have my new-to-me car leave me stranded in Nevada on our second day together. And many people people think I must be disturbed for buying a Mini Cooper at this stage in my life. It also pays homage to my misadventure, which many people think was a big mistake. Additionally, it will remind me that my Mrs. will be perturbed if I spend more time and/or money on the car than I do on her! Once I figure out how to post photos, I will set up a garage. Thanks again to everyone for the support and guidance!
Yes, Dave was wrong. http://www.motoringfile.com/2005/07/14/factory_jcw_kit_confirmed_for_06_model_year/
You don't have to name your MINI -- I haven't named mine -- but a lot of MA members do. AND, I don't know what "stage of life" you are in, but I am 55 years old. Corvettes are mid-life crisis cars, MINIs are just fun (sorry VetsVette). Stop and pick up some flowers when you are close to home, and tell the Mrs. how much you missed her. CD
I will hit the big 50 before the end of the year. My kids and grand kids think I am too old for a Mini! I planted a yard full of flowers for my wife, she sees them every day.
Lots of us are old farts here. I am 53 so you are in good company. As far as the FJCW goes in 06 it was done at the factory but I believe it was still considered a add on kit. Like Dave said JCW does not mean what it use to. Giving your mini a name is a good tradition. Good luck with MISTRBD!
You are never too old to have a fun car to drive. I used to own a Mercedes, but it wasn't as fun as my MINI. The best thing about getting old for a car guy is driving whatever you feel like driving. When my dad turned 80, he called me at least once a week to discuss whether he should buy this badass Audi he really wanted to buy. He wanted it, but wasn't sure it was financially prudent to buy it -- he was spending my inheritance. I told him, "shut up and buy the car!" I drove him to the Audi dealership to pick it up. So, tell the kids and grand kids to shut up, and take them for a ride in your MINI. If they don't have fun, there is something wrong with them. CD
