Now have very good news to report.
TC replaced free of charge along with a heat shield of some kind.
Was treated very well by all the people at MINI of GR, especially Don Lown, the service adviser
The little car purrs like a kitten now and have not heard any of the offending noises
Will continue to say good things about the dealership called the Sharpe Collection as well
I guess they are one in the same
End of report

Well, I made the big trip from Mishawaka to Grand Rapids to get the death
rattle diagnosed and low and behold it was determined the timing chain
needs to be replaced.
Diagnosis time was only a little more than a hour.
Afterwards it was down the road to Enterprise car rental and
ended up with a shitbox to drive home called a Fiat.
Was quite depressing driving this thing for the 2 hours but I managed to
put up with it
Thank you all for the nice warm welcome and nice comments-

Besides Nathan's realm, here is another resource full of MINI information from every angle including a huge directory of independent repair shops all across the country. I keep that link handy when we go on cross country trips just in case.
Like Dave and some other guy once said; 'without pictures, it didn't happen'.-

Welcome! Enjoy the Ride!
Re-your rattle. I'll assume you've checked the oil? We tend to burn it pretty quickly, and that can make a pretty rattly sound. -

Hey, I kind of doubt that the power steering is the same between an 03 R50 and your MINI, but I'm pretty sure my Dreaded Noise (which one mechanic said was the transmission) was actually a sucking sound from low power steering fluid.
