I'd recommend an Outback with the 6 cylinder, 2010 trough now, whatever fits the budget. I've been putting miles on my daughter's and love the thing. Will sell the blue Mini sooner or later and get one myself. For "gettin' things done" this is the car. Huge amount on the market, safe, Best of breed All wheel drive that actually works (we are in Wisconsin and know what a good 4WD feels like), roomy, fuel efficient and by now they have the 4 cyl oil burning and CV issues sorted. The 6 cyl is a safer bet with reliability, though. Never had any issues, while in the past the 4 cyl has had head gasket, oil burning and CVT problems.
I'd never buy a new car, though. Saw the prices at the dealer and am still chuckling. $36k for a car/small SUV? What are they smoking. My daughter's 2011 6 cyl that took a few days in the garage to get up to near new function was $11k.

Don't know what your budget is but look at the new countryman. It is like riding in a living room on wheels. If you want so real fun...buy yourself a 2005/6 R53 s. It's like a go-kart that is street legal.

This is a strange place to ask such a question.
