Hey all, Going to be ordering a hub and steering wheel this week. Anyone done this before, and want to lend a hand on install? I have resistors for the airbag. The only part of the install I'm slightly concerned about is ensuring I figure out how to get turn signal canceling squared away. Thx.
Disconnect the battery before starting! Do NOT reconnect till everything is buttoned up. I have tried 3 hubs and find the turn signal canceling to be hit or miss. I'm used to just canceling them manually. What wheel are you using. I've used momo, Sparco and OMP. I like the OMP the best.
What hub worked out best? I've lost all cruise control functuality (or will have when I get the car back), no reason not to change the wheel at this point.
I'm planning on rerouting the cruise wiring somewhere on the dash. Just for the trips to the Dragon. **Lazy**
Did the cruise rerouting. Have a Vi-Pec now, no cruise on the model I'm using. Since mine doesn't work I'll swap panels with you. Keep in mind, my car is sitting in Detroit for at least another week or so. Look to the right of the wheel in the lower dash panel. You'll see the cruise button.
Dude that's awesome! I haven't picked out my wheel yet. Hub: http://www.andysautosport.com/hub_adapter/mini_cooper/2004.html Looking at this wheel: http://www.ogracing.com/sparco-l-999-mugello-street-steering-wheel
Awwww man.... Chuck The VW crowd is startin to rub off on you... Next up.... Chuck wearing lederhosen.... Showing off his tattooed legs...
Hub is by Sparco. It's a cleaner look and better fit than the modified MOMO for a BMW fitment. Current Steering Wheel is an OMP. Have had Momo and Sparco before. Being Alcantara, my preference, they are hard to keep clean. Replace every year or two. My preference is 330mm, light to no dish, flat bottom. Found 320mm a tad to small, my knuckles lightly dragged over the stalks at 320mm. A custom 5 mm spacer was created. Ruined the feel for me. A smaller diameter than OEM does quicken the steering. Careful when you sneeze. Disclaimer - No airbag in these aftermarket wheels. The risk you take is your own.
Airbag? I have a friend that can get you a tested airbag cheap...... :yesnod: [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNjEihi7XmY&google_comment_id=z12bthxzztipv3aub23fvpug1tngyzxoq04"]Airbag - YouTube[/ame]
If you are running without an airbag you should have a harness as well. Your seat belt was designed to let you move to the airbag. The author of this post is not currently taking his own advice, but wanted to make sure you keep this in mind as you make your modifications.
Roger that. I will have harnesses. I just am not convinced of my fastidiousness in always wearing them daily. They're 6 points. Lots to do every time I get in the car. But I'll do my best.
Not to start a debate... 6 point harness is not street legal. Not DOT approved However, it's probably not that they wouldn't be, it's just the DOT has not tested and passed them. Probably because it ends up being an owner or 3rd party installation and there is no guarantee that all was done properly. As it is now, the industry is on the hook because it's all factory installed and the government is just fine with that. If you mess with it, there's no one to hold liable from a product standpoint if it fails. Just something to keep in mind.
Wheel and hub will be here Wednesday. Should be able to get it installed before my track weekend at Mid-Ohio this Saturday.
Who is running at Mid-Ohio this weekend? I am going there Monday for the Auto Interests day, if it is the BMW club my friend Chandler will be there in a Yellow Vette.
