Yep, I think you're right. I'll be keeping an occasional eye out there, but I think i'll plan on being pretty picky on a nice 06 (maybe 05). Shame though, as I was really starting to look forward to hearing that burble and pop of the R53 exhaust and whine of the super.
Of course the best part (that I left out above) is that I already have a fantastic R56 Justa in the drive (well two if you count the wife's R55), so I really can't complain a whole lot!

Yup. That means you have plenty of time to find the perfect replacement!

Apples and oranges. The switch was huge and they did in fact design to reduce production costs. The suspension was also softened. I know it is a small issue, BUT for me the terrible radio controls. Every time I had one as a loaner I cursed it.
They are both great cars, just different. -

I was just in a loaner for a few days and it seems they are condensing the radio again a little, which IMO is a good thing.
I have had R53 envy for a long time, but the more I do to my R56 the more I really love and enjoy it.
I've also started making plans to fix (on my own) the 2 major flaws in reliability that BMW can't seem to figure out or just doesn't want to.
If you really like your current car than keep it. If you can't live any longer without the R53, than get it... we all will understand either way you go -

The R56s look almost clownish. At least my 2012 is a bit more subdued, so I am not unhappy with it - but it's still a bit overdone.
And I don't doubt that the R56 improved production costs, but at least according to the book MINI: 50 years, that wasn't the main reason behind the changes.
The book states that although the changes appear cosmetic on the surface, there were real improvements made.
Anyway - I will stop belaboring the point. I have done enough research to know that there are many happy owners of R53s, so it's far from a piece of junk. -
I prefer the Mk.1 MINIs to the Mk.2, simply for stance, looks, and overall impression. And hellz yeah on the supercharger - if you get it, fit the Alta foam air cleaner for a wonderful little aural surprise. I think Amy's lost 10% on her MPG simply from running the engine mostly up to the redline whenever she can just to hear that winderful whine.
As for reliability, Amy's has well over 100K on the car. Yes we've replaced the power steering pump (an issue some people have issues with after just 15K miles) and wear-type items like brakes and rotors, but... that's it. No other issues. That there's Honda-type reliability in my book...
