It's an option when setting up the forums, well it could be switched on or off at any time to show the date and for those created in the past 24 hours, the time. So sites leave it off, others leave it on. The default is off. Some site owners think it adds clutter and want a more clean design.

There is a whole school of thought between each option and if it helps or hurts a site. My own thought is that it good to know when a thread was started.

 

Exactly, knowing the age of the thread (young or old) helps to put the information in context. Then the reader can determine the information's value to him or her.

 

Just by seeing whether or not I've posted in a thread gives one all the context they need.

On another site...you can't put your link...so I have to refer to it as...the letters before "N" & "B" Site.

 

Need to know if a thread has grey hairs or diapers... I vote on.

 

Agree. Without this feature, there is no immediate way of knowing if the OP for a particular thread is likely to still be responsive or seeking answers to particular questions, or long since moved on and no longer part of the MINI borg actively enhancing the collective and seeking perfection. Evidently not necessary for sewing enthusiasts. :sosp:

Then again many of the grey haired threads are useful and updates to shed new light or validate a concept or idea increase the collective knowledge base.

 

I have a T-shirt that says, And your point is...
I wear it on days when I know some of the dimmer light bulbs in the crowd at work are not going to be helping much.
