when I got my car tuned it had fuel issues above 6800 rpm. I want to adress that issue and build the motor to make some top end power. reving barely to 7k is teh lame on a NA cooper :p I would like to adress the lameness as well.

Bumping this old thread for interest. Thinking of going balls to the wall and getting a head and camshaft on my '06 R50. I'd really like to know how dramatic the difference is going to be before I shell out that much money for the parts, install, and tune... A sleeper R50 would be a blast, but if I can't get in touch with anyone who's done it, maybe I should just spend $3k on a rat bagged Camaro to drag on the weekends :/

Probably be lucky to end up with 130 HP after a tune with it.. and that of course depends on which head/cam combo etc. etc... may not end up with that much....
I say buy the drag car unless you can completly rebuild your motor. I've heard of 200 HP R50 motors but they have been completly gone thru...

Agree!! After all the money is spent, the chassis is lightened, the suspension is worked..... Whoose.... you are passed with an r53 and a 15% pulley.

I would look into this.. Good r50 Ported Head, Nice camshaft, water-meth, and then Nitrous!! Even then there might be a piston change needed ( the r50 doesnt have forged pistons ...do they??)

A good power adder is needed to keep up with or smoke a Supercharged or turbo engine!! And all Nitrous is a LIQUID Super Charger!!

    Have fun...

    Just saying......................................

Thanks for the input guys! I know the r53 is a better performance platform, but I'm not looking to race anyone. I'd just like some more power on the highway. I've considered getting an r53, but I have so much into my car, I'd have to spend all that money on suspension, wheels, tires, audio, exhaust, etc all over again! Looking at the cost of everything, plus install and tune... It's pretty steep.

Is there any appreciable improvement from just a camshaft?

Do you even know what you are asking most of the time??:)

One of the best cams for the r50 is the NS1. It will drop in with no tune needed( although a tune is always better with any mod..). You will keep the low to mid range and gain on the topend. Also if you set it in a few degrees advanced, you can gain even more power.. Most of the other cams ( Schrick/RMW/Cat/ Newamn... ect) are more set for a blower or turbo, and there will be a lowend loss.

    Just a thought.................................

I can't exactly explain because every time I read one of Thumpers posts I go stupid I guess its shock or something. So I resort to simple pokes because I am shocked stupid and can't come up with anything constructive its just that bad. I guess I need to work on desensitizing myself to Thumpers posts because they sure are duzzies.

After all the web posts BS-ing dust settles. You really only need to contact one person if you want to know what a good CAM will do in your car.

I would only call one person that has been tuning Minis all over with excellent proven results for years.

Well then, please try and keep it to yourself. :ihih: Or, better yet, tell us why it is not the path you would take and offer a solution. Contribute more than pot shots.

    Contact Jan at RMW.

I called him years ago when I had my R50 and wanted a Stroker Motor.

Long story short, he wouldn't sell me one "under good conscious" because I had the notoriously bad Midlands tranny and told me that tranny wouldn't handle it.
That was all I needed to hear.

I knew at that point he was a stand up guy. Listen to what he says.

    Your welcome.

Working with a true professional that has tested and proven what works is 100% better than being some other companies R&D on your dime.

I second giving jan a call...PUTTING NITROUS ON A CAR IS NOT A SUPERCHARGER REPLACEMENT...build the motor to a more high revving setup since you dont have a supercharger or nitrous you need to keep the car up in the higher RPM levels to maintain power so a good high revving motor...and seriously thumper...why the hell do you continue to tell people its ok not to tune their car by putting a reground cam in? when you mess with the internals of a engine you always have to tune...you could be creating a potentially fatal scenario for the engine...

The need for tune after any mods is always a suggested recomendation... but not a requirement. I would think that you have run the NS1 on a r50 to see if there was any issues , befor you tune it?? Yes??

Ok... the truth is that IF you want a good solid HP increase and more torque.. it IS Nitrous!! This is a known and trusted power builder since the late 70's. These two Yahoos ( DaveO-Camaro ) are just in denial!! This Nitrous Oxide is SO effective it is Banned at almost every kind of automotive racing because of ITs Huge gains above and beyond the basic or advanced engine building! The Two detractors here on this thread are the usual followers of a different camp. AND if you dont use that camps product you are an idiot. ( really???lol)

Reground camshafts have been around since the 40"s and a highly used procedure on many a full racing team and cars. The use of a Hyd roller lifter has increased the reliability of a good quality camshaft that has been 'reground ' for a different spec. It also saves the cost of the core and that cost savings can be passed on to the user. OR in some instances a grinder can go cheaper on the core and the camshaft will fail!!
    Newmansoftlobe.jpg
A good quality core would not have failed as this core did.. even IF the quality core has been 'reground'. If it is the fact that the base circle will be altered.. the NEWMAN/ Cat/ NS / RMW cams all alter the base circles off the OEM spec.. again, ( one example is the Schrick cam..and you have to 'clearance the Spark Plug tube' for that spec to clear) the hyd roller lifter allows certain reductions with NO bad effects.

Using the Air fuel ratio.. the knock sensor .. ign timing.. as a guide, I do NOT have my engine tuned for any mods!! Cam..?? Nope!! Head...? Nope!! Exhaust and Header??.. Nope.
My data logs show a 11.4:1 AF at 7500 revs on the engine and 10.2 :1 AF at 7800 on the bottle. I do not profess to be a tuner or even close.. just telling you what I have . There is no reason that others can not be doing the same.. 'cept for these two cool aid drinking know it all Trolls.

Anyone can go back and see if ANY of these two yahoos have actually helped anyone.. directing to a vendor is good!! But to continue to show there huge gains in Knowledge, or the basic fact that they have no idea on what they are talking about is totally comical.. " It is better to be thought Stupid. Than to open your mouth and remove all doubt!!" These two are the meaning of that statement.

ANY engine builder will advise on how to get more power from a 1.6 ltr engine with NO turbo or SC. ANY ENGINE BUILDER!! Yes the trans isnt a hurkey Mutha, and care needs to be taken. It amazes me that these two great men with all this knowledge on how to TROLL, can not help this some facts of their own... LOL they have nothing because they BOUGHT it all!!

Cam.. ( NS1), Head.. (TPR1), Adjustable Cam gear, .. Header exhaust .. will all allow good solid gains!! Tune will allow it all to work better together. BUT.. Nitrous Oxide will surpass ANY AND ALL mods you can do or have done!! ( Did I go to fast for you 3 jerks??) , Again I have to assume that you do understand the strength of the Trans ( unless you are of the two pea-brains)

Dont be twisted by these trolls!! Just get some ideas, call and see whom you want.. IF money is no issue, then the trolls have directed you to a good source. LOL

    Thanks for the Posts...

    Just saying....................................

Base engine with no mods.. 147 WHP ( Dyno jet) and then a bit of spray on a un-tuned 06 r53. Test is over 5 years old.
basetoNOS12-10.jpg 254 WHP and 237 Tq. NOS system cost only $375.00!!
Engine is now at 287 WHP and still on the streets!! SO, listen to the Dave and Camaro, or think for yourself.. cool?

Putting Nitrous on a COOPER engine would result in you ejecting your rods through the front of the block. These are not FORGED rods..........if you HAD actually rebuilt one of these engines you would know this and tell people to NOT do this.

I think it's reckless for you to continue to post this info to people who may NOT have the knowledge to know the differences........
