4 jack stands can fall over pretty easily if you bump the vehicle or are torquing on a particularly frustrating bolt (i.e stuck lug nut). I like the fact that this thing will not allow the car to fall onto the ground or whomever might be under the car. It could conceivably tip if not centered, but the demonstration in the video of the guys bumping the lifted cars show a nice stable platform.
Uses an electric drill to lift/lower.
It is pricey, I will agree. I think Moss Mini has them for $1895 + $150 shipping.
Just wondering if anyone had used one, as it looks like a great device if you lift the car a lot. Jacks/stands are a PITA and I still don't trust them. Ramps are good unless the car is lowered, which the MINI crowd usually is, and they do not allow the car to be completely lifted off the ground all at once.
If you watch the video, I believe they say that thing requires 4 inches of clearance. I know it would not clear either of my minis. But might be worth while asking Octane about it. I am sure his ride is lowered and he uses it.
I have a low profile jack. When I was using 15 inch rims for track, even that was too high. I had to carry a 2x4 to roll up on to get the jack under the car.
We used one a long time ago with the Triumph's, they were just ok only good for certain jobs. Harbour Freight has some better one that have swing arms and posts.
For anywhere near that money, you can get a real lift. 4 good jackstands properly placed are not going to roll over by tugging on a bolt. As in any lift, jack or jack stands, it is wise not to put limbs under the car when working on it. We had a similar tool in one of the first shops I worked in, because a lift wouldn't clear the ceiling. We were pretty excited when it came in, but it ended up not being the best tool for us. I'm not saying you shouln't get it, just that I perfer floor jacks and jack stands.
The Harbor Freight lifts are considerably cheaper... I am not looking at one right now. Was just curious if there was anyone using one. And so far as jack stands, not falling over, I have had that happen. They have the ability to tip individually or in pairs, which can be dangerous, especially on smooth concrete. I am very safety conscious, and thankfully it didn't do any damage to body or car.
