Did you order from Way?

 

The one listed as OEM size isn't quite 1% overdrive. To be exact it is 0.8% overdrive, per ATI's measurement. Just some FYI for those conserned about the size.
If you ordered it today, I haven't seen the order cause I have em ready to ship.

 

I purchased from a non MA sponsoring off forum vendor for some personal reasons. I am sure Werkin or Way can provide superior service and support on this product.

 

Well, I am disappointed to report that the ATI Super Damper weighs at a hefty 90 oz, that is just 2 oz lighter than the OEM face lift damper for the 1st gen.

This is 5.625 lbs....... A far cry from the 3.6 lbs listed above and on the ATI website as the weight of this damper!

So, while this is still a good product, don't get it if your only reason is to get something lighter than the face lift damper!

On the ATI website there is only one listed. This is their 'standard' OEM replacement, the 5.5 inch diameter model (i.e. 1% oversized). ATI model # 917992

Yep, it is a heavy mofo, just like OEM.

 

I just meant did you check to make sure they actually sent the right one. Part number on the product is correct.

Too bad if the info on the site is wrong, but it is still a great option for a replacement.

 

Yeah, the enclosed paperwork is correct, the box has the proper part number, and the hub is also stamped with the proper number.

So yeah, it is very disappointing about that spec discrepency, but sure it is still an excellent OEM replacement.

I just HATE specification surprises, if I did not receive what was specified....... Then I did not get what I paid for.

So, has anyone else out there put one of these on a scale? Any supporting or refuting data out there?

The issue starts with ATI as their website specifies a total weight of 3.6lbs or rather 3lb 9.6oz

My measurements yield:
ATI Super Damper 5lbs 10oz
Late Model OEM Damper 5lbs 12oz

So, the ATI spec of 3.6lbs is not even remotely close to the reality of an actual measured value of 5.6lbs.

I realize, it is not your spec K. However, I did take away the impression that you were in agreement with the 3.6lbs stated specification.

The bottom line is that this is still an excellent replacement for the OEM crank damper, but the weight saving from the late model damper is not statistically significant. For all intents and purposes, it weighs the same as the late model OEM damper.

Oh and speaking of correcting others, you typed 5lb 18oz above, but I think you meant 5lb 13oz as that is consistent with your Mini Torque post.

 

At first ATI wanted to argue with me. ATI is definitely not the best when it comes to customer service. Then finally it was admitted that their website was WRONG, flat wrong. Their website will eventually be corrected.

So, expect your ATI Super Damper to weigh 5.625lbs, not the 3.6lbs specified on the website!

 

Big mistake to argue with any customer when it's proven that the company is wrong.:nonod: The best course of action is to apologize, make the correction and move on. I can't understand why a company would want to damage their reputation by doing something like that?:mad2: Cool heads need to prevail on both sides of the fence.:yesnod:

Good customer service is golden.

 

What I received from ATI:
- no apology
- no commitment on issue resolution
- no thanks for identifying their documentation error
- a bad attitude and defensiveness
- a listing of many of the dampers they did spec properly on their website, as if that matters to me

Having experience running customer support operations for a large global corporation provides a little background in assessing 'good' from 'not so good' customer service. I would characterize what I experienced from ATI as 'bad'. Keeping a cool head is definitely critical.

It is a good product, but be aware that it weighs 5.625 lbs, not the 3.6 lbs as listed on the website. Also, hope that you never have to call them with an issue, as you will be sorry you did.

It is not likely that any of you would ever have cause to communicate directly with the manufacturer anyway. However, a little insurance against such an encounter would be to just purchase from one of our sponsors like Werkin. So in the unlikely event that there would be a need to contact ATI......make Keith do it.

 

Well surprise surprise, I just looked and ATI has already amended their website.
Take a look:

It is still wrong though as the weight is spec'd as 6 lbs, but as stated above it actually weighs 5.625 lbs. So now it is wrong on the high side, and so it looks like it weighs more than the OEM damper, which it really does not! :crazy:

Keith, this is a great opportunity for you to call ATI, and inform that their inaccurate website specification is hurting your sales of this product as your potential customers will not purchase something that is heavier than the OEM damper. ut:

 

Maybe they are using a really bad / damaged scale that is fluctuating wildly and they haven't figured it out yet?ut:

 

I guess I dont understand the need for all the talk about the weight if Kevin weighed it and established the weight for us.
Also 90% of the reason to buy this is for its damping ability not the light weight.
If it was infact for the light weight we could all buy lightened crank pulleys... right?

 

1. Not sure who Kevin might be, but Keith is certainly a part of this thread. I do not require anyone to weigh something for me. So, I made my own measurements and discovered the ATI error.
2. The issue with this product was that it did not weigh as specified. As such it was effectively 'out of spec', and so a purchase made expecting specification conformity resulted in disappointment.
3. Lighter is always quicker. Weight is certainly a factor, as is damping ability.
4. Many in fact do select a lightened/undamped pulley as weight is their primary selection criteria. For me, I wanted superior damping, and superior weight. This ATI Super Damper was erroneously specified to deliver exactly that.

The weight listed was originally for the "Shell Assembly" - internal inertia weight and outer shell - not including the hub.

The shell assembly (3.6lbs) + the crankshaft hub (2.6lbs (average)) = ~6.2 lbs
