Try a iPod or MP3 player and see if that changes it. i know phone volume and iPod Volumes are different. that is why it sounds OK in ear phones and the phone asks you if you are o.k. when you try to turn it up.??? but other than that ground issue or a stereo cable could be causes...but this thread was a great read you do have to admit.

Frikkin' clown college around here...........
Yea, phone volume is turned up and I can listen to the tunes no problem with ear phones.
Maybe I should check and see if there is a way to increase the sound level of the mp3's and reload them........-

something just doesn't sound right here. If you can get a good enough signal out for headphones, then the aux should work.
Is the iPhone in a case or bumper? Is the audio cable plugging in completely?
Do you have another car with aux in that you can test it on, and another cable, to completely eliminate both those as the culprit?
Do you have another iphone (or a friend with one) who can plug it in to your aux in with the same cable, to test?
What generation / model iPhone?-

Santa says ...... WHAT ?

Are you doing a straight cable, no ground? If so that's probably the issue.
Get something like this that plugs into power as well:
Amazon.com: Cosmos Black 4ft Long iPod / iPhone 2-in-1 Audio and Sync Cable. Apple Dock Connector to 3.5mm Audio AUX (Auxiliary) Connector AND USB Charge/sync Connector + COSMOS cable tie: Cell Phones & Accessories -
This. Make sure the cable is seated all the way in. -

The volume from the ear phones is loud enough for me, but the level may not be enough for the car.......
I am using the oem aux input with the radio set to 5 and the cable is fully seated in the plug, both ends in fact. -

Is that cable from oh I don't know......ALTA.

How high do you turn up the volume on the phone? What phone is it? From what you've said, I'd say it is a bad cable.
