Not worried since I have an R53 and don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon.

 

Another advantage of being an old fart: it's not likely I'll have to go shopping for another car!!

 

There is a kind of clutch the engages should the power fail mechanically linking the 2 parts of the shaft. I still don't trust it.

 

When the cars are new it will be fine, but once they pass through a few owners & parts start to wear out the fun will begin.

 

Don't worry MINI has not even developed it yet but when they do they already have a recall ready. This way they can blame low US sales on it.

I've known about this for about 5 years (Nissan's steer by wire), and don't forget airplanes have been entirely fly by wire for decades now.....I'm not worried about it.

I also don't like it much.....not the technology itself, but what they do with it. Case in point - drove an Acura RL the other day, it wanted to nudge me back into the center of the lane, and I could feel it in the wheel constantly - no apexing on a backroad in that car! It was annoying.....and those constant little lights in the mirrors warning me someone was in my blindspot.....:crazy:

How about you don't make cars with huge blindspots?

 

Ugh that would suck driving a car like that. Just think what it would do if you tried to do donuts is a parking lot. :lol:

 

I don't know if you could turn it off or not.....I would hope so.

But the steer by wire will spread thru out the line over time.....

 

It must be a really thick wire, or it would twist right off when you were parking!

 

MINIdave I think what you are feeling is the stay in your lane because you can't drive nanny. Something different than drive by wire me thinks.

Yes Nissan has wire wobble steering on some models, don't believe Inacurates do, yet.

 

Yes Crash, that was my point.....it's not the steer by wire that's the problem, it's what they will be able to do with it - as in the can't stay centered in your lane nanny on the Acura.

Of course, it's the next step in autonomouse cars, taking control of the steering away. They've already done that with the throttle - ever drive one of those radar cruise controls? Trying building up momentum to make a pass with one of those turned on, you have to leave your lane to get back to your dialed in speed.

All of these nannys are frustrating to drive - if you're a driver who actually likes to drive your car....if you're one of those who prefers to text or cruise Facetube while on the road, it's a godsend. But it may turn out to be a good thing for us too, if we can shuffle all those folks over to the right lane and clear the road so we can DRIVE.

 

There's gotta be a dedicated fuse you could pull...

 

The Nissan system currently has triple redundancy too, plus the failsafe mechanical link.

But like I said, it's where it goes from there that annoys me....but they would not have spent the research dollars to build it if they didn't have a plan for its future......that plan will include handling enhancements like 4 wheel steering and ride attitude control, very much like the Williams of the 90's only even better.....so there could be some good come of it. The problem is at what cost, both in dollars and in control.

 

Farkin nannies I hates them. Hang on to your current cars folks so you can drive. For this old fart the future of driving looks very bleak indeed. :incazzato:
