When the ignition coils go bad, what symptoms will i experience? Should a check engine light light up?

I would guess you'd have a misfire, a check engine light & a code. Just a guess on my part.

On the 2nd gen cars the coil is part of the wire too, I think.

If the coil was going you'd have misfires. That would show up as a code.

Why do you think their is a bad coil? What are the symptoms.

What are the signs of a bad coil?
If they are Red and say MSD or black with Screamin Demon sticker on them.

^ Sorry I just had to say it.

On a 2nd gen the coil packs are part of the plug wires and each pug has a separate coil.
You could see misfires and other odd things but it's better to check for codes with a scanner and maybe replace the plugs before you even buy coils.

Especially if you have never changed your plugs.

What kind of mileage does your car have?

Well said. I had the exact thing happen with MSD coil, and it's in the trash now. Steady misfire and CEL. The stock coil doesn't say, "Made in China" for whatever that is worth.
