And yes, the in-car method is a myth.

    What's an "in-car method"?

I wound up getting a Bluetooth OBDII adapter from eBay (~$35) and using the Torque app on my Android phone. It works pretty well; it displays gauges in realtime and can clear codes (but not adaptations). I don't know if there are any custom PIDs that can be used with it - there's a programming option for them, but I don't know how to convert the values from the Scangauge thread I saw.

I just got gifted the DashCommand app. I haven't played with it yet, but it seems like it will data logo, track temps, Gs and general track fun - you do need a dongle though.

I think of the AccessPort as more of a tuning tool that also reads codes.

Kind of like buying a bluray player when all you need is a desk clock.

Note that the Accessport only stores and does tunes for the R56, I believe...

    Garmin EcoRoute HD

I'm seriously looking a this:[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-ecoRoute-Vehicle-Diagnostics-Communicator/dp/B00313JWSO/ref=wl_itt_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1J2KIMK9MV9M&colid=23SBZKM732SN6"]Amazon.com: Garmin ecoRoute HD Vehicle Diagnostics Communicator: Electronics@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21J2KUSiKuL.@@AMEPARAM@@21J2KUSiKuL[/ame] Garmin bluetooth dongle. I believe it will work with my MINI branded Garmin 1280.

It has realtime gauges and will read and reset codes as far as I can tell. It's less than $100 at Amazon. I'm trying to find a decent review.

I really want to know what the delay is like. How fast to the virtual gauges update? Bluetooth isn't known for high bandwidth.

My Schwaben (Foxwell NT510 for BMW/MINI/Rolls) has done well with my former R50 and current R55,
but my wife just got a 2020 BMW M240i convertible and it's not compatible with that (despite the latest
BMW update from a few weeks ago). Foxwelltech customer support says it isn't and won't be compatible
with new F-chassis BMWs. They also said the NT530 currently isn't compatible with that car either.

So, ... after a lot of research, I ordered a Launch x431 ProS Mini that should work well on both cars and
    a bunch more.

Please don't tell me you had one and that I've made a terrible mistake.

I'll report back a few weeks after I get it.

Other scanners in the running were the Autel MK808 or MX808 or DS808, Carly, Innova 5610, Actron CP9695, Autophix 7810, and the Launch CRP429C.

I've had my Garmin Ecoboost for years now and while it might read and clear codes, I just use it for an instrument display, it seems to be pretty close to real time. I like that I can have temp gauge, accurate speedo (not the one in the dash display which is a couple MPH off) inlet temps and a bunch of other info displayed in a nice large easy to read format - the gauges are analog as well as digital.

I have a friend with the latest and greatest Autel, so I just go to his place when one of my German coded cars acts up.

Looks like close to $700 for that Launch?

With tax and free shipping from Amazon,
it was just about exactly $700.

Updates after the first 2 years free are
    also exorbitant (?350/yr), but I’m
hoping my current cars won’t require
more updates after a couple years.
