one thing about tires...ignore the sizes. shop by what fits your rim width and overall diameter (OD). Bridgestone RE-01R and the RE-11 that replaced it as well as Advan AD08's and the Dunlop Star Specs are known to run much wider than their size suggests. A 255 width in any of these is generally wider than a normal 265 width.
So, don't get hung up on sizes. That said, I always found 16" VERY hard to find good rubber for in the MINI range....15" and 17" rubber was much simpler. I ran 225/45/16 Yoko rcomps on 7.5" wheels for my auto-x set....worked great.
