I've always had issues with key starting on the rallies so I remove the key and steering lock. I replace the key start with a toddle switch and push button start. I've read there is something in the key to talk with what?? to start the engine. Like if I lost the key I would have to get something reprogramed? Also how do I stop the door/hatch locks locking after I drive a few yards? locked doors on a rally is a no no.

    Thanks

On a gen1 mini there is an imoblizer...a chip the car "reads" which is in the key...no chip, no start. The way remote starters get around this is to open the key remove the chip, then MOUNT IT, like with glue, very close to the reader, which is by the ignition switch.
So to start, the key must not only match the groves like a traditional key, but the car must recognize the chip.
The door locking is a dealer programed option...

interesting and good info. So if I just pop the key in the normal place but have the button starter I would have the best of both worlds.

Yeah a place to "store" the chip. But get the auto door lock changed first, any dealers can do it, or a good tuner
