I grew up on free maple syrup. My grandfather has a "cabane a sucre", my aunt has one but she isn't quite a generous.
I hope the price hasn't gone up yet, it's the Michgan MINI summer picnic Saturday, I was thinking of making my maple syrup pie.-

I remember having this as a kid in Quebec
Tire sur la Neige Maple Taffy on Snow or 'Tire sur la Neige' is the perfect way to end a maple syrup meal. First the maple syrup must be cooked to a temperature of 238ºF (114ºC). Then the hot maple taffy is poured on clean snow spread that has been spread in a wooden trough.
The maple taffy takes only a few minutes to harden. Wooden spoons are distributed among the crowd anxiously waiting for the tasting to begin.

Police Seize More Than 600 Barrels of Maple Syrup
Follow-up on the missing Maple Syrup...
Police in Canada have seized more than 600 barrels of maple syrup in New Brunswick as part of an investigation into the theft of millions worth of syrup in Quebec and are transporting it back to Quebec under police protection, officials said Wednesday.
The Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers reported large quantities of syrup missing last month during a routine inventory, finding empty barrels at a site of the province's global strategic reserve at St-Louis-de-Blandford.
Quebec provincial police Sgt. Christine Coulombe said Wednesday police executed a search warrant in Kedjwick, New Brunswick last week, but could not provide more information as the investigation was ongoing.
However, the owner of Kedjwick-based exporter S.K. Export Inc. said police visited last week and told him it was related to the missing syrup. Etienne St-Pierre said his usual suppliers, small producers based in Quebec, sold it to him.
This has left the New Brunswick exporter in a sticky situation. He's been locked out of his office, which he said is under Royal Canadian Mounted Police watch.
"They came in and said we're taking everything, there wasn't much I could do," said Etienne St-Pierre, who said he initially thought the officers were joking.
Saying he has nothing to hide, Etienne St. Pierre has since shown all his paperwork to investigators trying to get to the bottom of the great syrup heist.
The shipment of the pancake-topper was making its way back to Quebec in a heavily guarded convoy of 16 trailer-loads on Wednesday.
"(The convoy's) under police protection going somewhere in Quebec," said Yvon Poitras, the general manager of the New Brunswick Maple Syrup Association.
Quebec is a maple syrup superpower, producing 80 percent of the world's maple syrup and the warehouse involved stocked more than $30 million worth of the sticky substance.

All they grow up in New Brunswick is potatoes.... Potatoes don't bring much at market....
However, Maple syrup is like liquid gold....
I'll bet this all goes back to a couple of NB potatoes farmers that were tired of all their hard work getting them nothing and would gaze longingly at their pancakes in the morn and decided on an action plan....-

Maple Syrup Heist Solved
MONTREAL — Quebec provincial police say they've solved a massive maple syrup heist.
Police say they arrested three people and are looking for five others after 10,000 barrels of maple gold, valued at $20 million, were pilfered from a warehouse east of Montreal between August 2011 and this past July.
"Two-thirds of the stolen syrup has been found," police said in a statement.
Richard Vallieres, 34, Avik Caron, 39, and a third unnamed suspect were to appear in court in Trois-Rivieres, Que., on Tuesday.
They face charges of theft, conspiracy to commit theft, handling of stolen goods and fraud.
Police say they seized vehicles used to transport stolen maple syrup and executed several search warrants in Quebec, New Brunswick, Ontario and several northern U.S. states. Officers also seized two forklifts, four syrup kettles, platform lifts and six electronic scales.
The maple syrup was stolen from a warehouse operated by Quebec's federation of maple syrup producers, police said.
Police believe the suspects pumped the maple syrup into tanker trucks and drove away from the heavily secured location.
Some of the sticky stuff was found in October at S.K. Export in Kedgwick, in northern New Brunswick near Quebec's Gaspe region.
Quebec produces up to 80% of the world's maple syrup every year, and the province's syrup producers federation has managed the world's strategic reserves for the past 12 years-

Is there nothing sacred in this cruel world?
And look - if there isn't a place where all the small fuzzy animals can live in safety, just don't tell me, OK? -

Those shifty Canucks.....
In order to have a strategic reserve, they would have had to stockpile the Maple syrup.... If they are stockpiling it, that means they are keeping it out of the market and are driving the price up. This stuff is already too expensive as it is....
Now the US is gonna retaliate and start a "Strategic Reserve" of Aunt Jemima syrup.... The horror of it all.... When will this end???? -
