:cornut: Change the filter and fill it up (4qts) with the correct oil. Observe the color and consistency of the oil on the dipstick 3x weekly. This with tell you if anything else is needed. Good Luck. Jason
If I were in you situation this is what I would do to clean all the crud and junk out. Drain the oil you put in recently and check it out. It should have done some cleaning. Buy some cheaper 5w 30 and a can of seafoam. Next fill it up with the cheap stuff and add 1/2 a can of Seafoam and run it for a while and take it for a few good runs. A few days will be ok. **I would only buy the cheap oil because I am going to use it to flush and clean and then drain it while it is still warm and within 100 miles tops. Next drain it and check the oil for lots of crud and junk that got cleaned out. Finish off the job by changing the filter this time and fill it with some good oil and check it like 3x's a week.
I'm so glad I switched from that other forum!! All the answers I got over there were from Vendors who just promote their products. Ad not using the valve near the throttle body is ssomethong I've heard before, why is that?
^^^ Yes the condition of your oil can be attributed to short trips & how long it has been in there. If you can only do short trips because of your life situation you may want to consider changing your oil more often. Oil is much cheaper than engine rebuilds.
I change it every 5k and I use royal purple, the only reason I hadn't changed it was because I didn't have money to do it
Well.... Checking the oil level doesn't take any time.... And ignoring the level will surely drain a 17 year old bank account.... FAST.... Sooooo...... Check that oil regularly.....
Hmm I don't recall saying I don't check it, I check the dipstick quite often. But gathering 60 bucks and an hour of free time is a different story, I had known the oil was spent long ago. And that's enough with you all fighting about alta, and this ass that I quoted. All I wanted was some info, not opinion wars and belittling
Ok relax we are a big family and we sometimes like to bicker with each other. (no harm, no foul) Metalman is in no way and ass. He was guys trying to give a little advice that I and many other agree with. For the record ALTA is junk. It's all in good FUN don't take things so personal.
:cornut: We sometimes forget that others who are new to the site don't realize that we old timers know each other so well that 'gentle, funny, familiar, badinage' will be misconstrued as in fighting and bickering. I started the 'Alta argument' as Dave.O is my friend and has had bad experiences with Alta parts, so on occasion I gently needle him. He is notorious for needling every one else but we expect it and love him for it. Please don't think that we are bickering and in fighting, we are lightening the mood and (hopefully) causing laughter. Comprende? I admire you sir as I also worked full time(40hrs/wk) while finishing high school and it wasn't easy but helped me to grow up rapidly and I wouldn't trade that experience for anything. Metalman will and does say anything that pops into his cabesa . Don't ever be offended by him, senile dementia will also strike you one day. Now relax and enjoy MA and your MINI. Jason
Sorry if I offended your 17 year old sensibilities. That was not my nor anyone else's intention. You asked for advice & we gave it to you. Take it or leave it, it is up to you. Lots of good folks here willing to help & welcome you. Oh one other thing, Dave O is always right even when he isn't.
Well 17 going to school, working and works on his own car! I am impressed! smokintires I see you are new to us, most of us are old farts and some are just farts but we are all fun. You just have to get to know us. Before you know it you to will be poking your finger in DaveO or Metalman eye and we will all get a good laugh! By the way we did have a rash of Minis loss oil quite fast causing rebuilds for some.
Its all FUN and games until someone losses an eye. We are all just a bunch of old guys trying to help you out. Also for the record I am right almost all the time but I have known to be wrong maybe once a year. Even if I am wrong I will argue with myself to prove I am right.
Which then begs to raise the question...... How much catch, can a catch can catch, if a catch can could catch sumtin?
Hell Dave, I didn't realize today was the day! Or is it? Either way, the casual feuding is always hilarious. On that note, it's time to crack one open... :beer Thanks for yet another great laugh!!
haha i got you i got you, thanks everyoone for the help On the Alta note, the one thing i bought from the em was the intercooler diverter. the first mod i did to my car because i thought it looked cool. two months later the rubber seals on top were destroyed. havent since and probably wont again purchase from them!
and can someone still tell me why the valve near the throttle body is a no no?. When i first started researching i found the M7 and Alta one both had those two connected to a T fitting then going to the catch can. But i had only ever heard it is bad to touch that one. and the BSH only uses the one that actually has the pcv valve on it
Never had a catch can. I read on the interwebs they were bad JuJu. Sorry I can't remember why. Someone who knows about them or thinks they do will be along shortly. :beer
