I have done that when needed but better to get it clean from the start if you can dusting coats of clear as you said can bail you out as well but the texture of that can haunt you to the last coat and require more sand and buff than should be needed to get a glass finish. Ideally, you spray your first coat of clear how you want it to look when done that said I do go a little easier on the first coat let it flash and hammer on coat two and three but you want that first coat flat if you can.

Here is my 2004 after 3 full wet coats of clear needed almost no sand and buff zero fisheyes I had been treating the plastic molding with a product I knew would give me hell if not cleaned 100%. I started with a dawn dish soap hand wash then actone wipe down then pressure wash with Castrol super clean purple degreaser. Then a waterborne prep wipe down then solventborne prep wipe down before I started sanding.

 

Acetone or Lacquer Thinner take care off all that before you shoot your paint right before you tack cloth one last time.

 

Looks like fisheye. Did you get any silicone on there before your final coat?

Clean it with some prep-sol & then wet sand those away. Clean again & have another go. Sorry this happened to you. I hate body work.

 

Clear can be a pain in the ass sometimes.

I always shake or mix the hell put of right before I spray and do short thin dusting coats.

Also very important, HUMIDITY. I have had the same think happen to me. I painted a few things in the morning around 10 am or so. They later that night after a day of curing I forgot about the humidity and got the same results you did.

I ended up wet sanding with 320 then 400 and shooting it again in lower humidity with great results. I spray several thin layers of clear and let them flash dry between coats with a little help from a heat gun.

 

Also beware of contamination oils/water from the compressor I like to run one of the cheap little filters at the spray gun to catch anything that might get past other filters/separators.

 

one other thing I thought to add interior parts can be tough to get clean if armor all or other like treatments have ever been used the stuff will keep coming to the surface right through the primer and base and fisheye the clear. If you don't get it all off to start with scrubbing the parts with ajax and hot water really helps.

 

How do you load the paint in the heat gun?
