I had this happen a few years ago on my previous MINI, a 2011 MCS hardtop. It was during one of our local club drives. The organizer arranged permission from a local airport operator for our MINIs to have access to the runway for some straight-line test runs. Starting from a dead stop at the end of the runway and wanting to get up to maximum speed as quickly as possible, I was a bit too spirited in yanking the shift lever going from 1st to 2nd and the whole thing, ring and all, came off in my hand. Completely my fault. It didn't take me long to get it pressed back into place, but it was certainly embarrassing.
One of our members with artistic talent and a sense of humor created a ink drawing to commemorate the occasion and made a surprise presentation to me at our end-of-the-year club awards ceremony. Thoroughly enjoyed by all...even me.
