As others said they are really only concerned with the car as an appliance. As we know that is not why we bought MINIs. We have all had issues but how many cars make you smile just be seeing them? How many cars can make a bad day at work fade from memory on even a short drive home?

Another long time Miniac we know is apparently giving up on his turbo and leaving the Mini fold after having so many problems.... :(

We may not like what they say, but they seem to be right on with the issues. We are all miniacs around here, so most of us have made the decision to live with the "quirks" of MINI ownership.

But, honestly, I will not be recommending the new MINI's to any of my friends/relatives.

Well... The 3 cylinders are just around the corner, so we'll get to see if MINI / BMW gets it right this time.....

I will only recommend Coopers. Most of the big/common issues are exclusive or nearly exclusive to the turbo motors... HPFP, melting hood scoops, timing chain, frozen throttle body, etc. (And I know I'm missing some)

My sister in law and her husband wanted to buy a new Mini, they live a couple hours from the closest dealership.....I told them not to buy one when asked. Hated to but....in all honesty they are more Honda people.

Bear in mind that CU has no interest in "car as lifestyle", only in "car as appliance". A car that's not obviously useful only as a toy is going to be expected to compete against 4 seat econoboxes, which will generally win on cost and reliability.

Obviously CR isn't. Bunch o' fuddy duddies.

Had fun been a factor, the MINI would be on the cover from here until jet packs finally take over.

CR guys are EXPERTS and know best

This year they like the Jap stuff the best, Last year it was the American stuff, The English or German stuff may come #1 in the next few years.

Mini probably did not get picked as being any good because one or two of the CR experts did not like the cup holders or the big speedometer. Maybe the test car was not the color they liked.

I have been talking to Mini owners about their cars since 2008 and every single person I have talked to seemed to really love their Mini's. That is why I bought mine in Oct of 2008. It is now 2012 and I have probably talked to 45 or 50 Mini owners and not one single person has told me they did not like their car. Not a ONE!!!

I know there are some people that don't like their particular dealer but I'm very lucky because living in Daytona I get to use the Orlando Dealer which is very good. But as far as the Mini is concerned it seams everyone that owns one I talked to like their car.

I have bought appliances based on CR's recommendations and been bitterly disappointed.
    I love my MINI.
I don't care what CR thinks about it.
It has greatly outperformed both the dishwasher and the refrigerator that CR said were so reliable.

Ok guys, I'm looking to buy a 2008 MCS. I know everyone here is a huge mini enthusiast and doesn't really want to say anything bad. But I've been doing a lot of research and everything seems to point towards spending much more on this car in repairs than should be acceptable. Even my friend who has been a mechanic for BMW for the last ten years says they're full of problems. I really want to buy one, but aside from the joy of driving one or just looking at it, is it really a wise purchase? Are these problems really that common? Has everybody experienced these major issues with their minis or are these complaints not the norm?

Not trying to stir the pot, I just need to make a decision.

Thanks in advance for any imput.

:cornut: My MINI MARGI(08 R56 MCS/JCWm) was a Dealership Garage Queen through more pre and post warranty fixes than I care to list here. I love that car and would not trade her but, I would be remiss in my MA duties if I did not warn you of this ahead of time. If you buy her, ensure that she has full warranty up through 50kmi or have an adequate automotive repair savings account. Good Luck!

First off, you don't get people popping onto the site to say their MINI ran fine today with no problems. You get a concentrated sense that all MINIs have lots of problems.

Are there issues, yeah, a MINI is not an automotive appliance. The joie de vivre a MINI provides far offsets the few problems the car has for many of us.

If the late model Mini's are soooo bad with problems

Why is there so many on the road and why do people you talk to always say they love their cars? :postcount

@ NEWBIE- if you want a MINI, buy it. They (all of them) are great..... my favorite car that I've owned to date. Will it have some issues? Maybe. Maybe not.
If you want 100% safe with 0% fun? Buy a Honda.

I remember when I bought my first MINI in 2007. It was an '03. My sister warned me that they didn't have a great track record for reliability. I said, "And?" She drove a Honda.

I've enjoyed the ride ever since and have not looked back
