I may need to replace my control arm bushings (waiting to check on some other things first), but if I DO have to replace them I'll go with the Powerflex units like this: MINI Cooper Powerflex Control Arm Bushings Question on getting the old bushings out: I found a great video showing the process if you have a lift, a blowtorch and an air chisel (below) but what about if you do NOT have these things? I'm sure I can bring my car to my local dealer along with the new Powerflex bushings, but I'm sure they'll charge me an arm and a leg. Given the job, though, is this just something I should grin and bear, and have the pros do? Thanks! I do a lot of work on my own cars, but as I get older it is getting harder for me. Especially black smith jobs like that. I had Helix do mine at the dragon. Since there is no dragon for another year I'd recommend driving up to see Chad at Detroit Tuned. If you get partway into that job & cannot complete it you are in a world of hurt. If you can do it good on ya!
And again I'll point to the M/A Library. Sine I'm on my phone I can't grab the link but I know there are articles on just this very subject. Since on does need a press or the special tool to remove and insert the bushings some of the M/A vendors offer a swap service where you can purchase the bushings already installed, you send your old ones back when complete.
Chad at Detroit tuned came up with this idea (one of the library article Nathan spoke of) that uses a cheap 3 jaw puller. http://www.motoringalliance.com/library/2nd-generation-mini-cooper-how-to-4/replace-front-control-arm-bushing-without-removing-subframe-62/
Having done them the old way, I will take advantage of one of the swap services offered next time....
So then you get a core charge refund or something? Otherwise, if you have to send him the bracket and wait for the new bushings to be pressed in, you'd have to have the car disassembled until they arrive, yes?
I believe so? If someone needs them call him At Custom Mini Shop, were I help out sometimes, we just do them as needed. Steve has a press and it takes a couple minutes to press them out :cornut:
A little visit to the WMW site reveals a $100 Charge to get the pre-pressed ones and an admonishment to send yours back soon to avoid egregious core charges. Powerflex Front Control Arm Polyurethane Bushing kit - Way Motor Works
Here is a good Link! or give us a call to book some time and we would be happy to install them. we have done lots and some times that value is priceless. Detroit Tuned 586-792-6464
