    I believe that is the true reason - someone in the UK reported breaking the window after bypassing the switch.

    The primary reason for the switch:
    The parcel shelf has two positions - a high position and the default low position. The high position provides considerably more boot space, at the cost of nowhere for the roof to fold. If you were to disable the switch and attempt to lower the roof with the shelf in the high position, it would be VERY BAD.
