Other than the engines coming from BMW, there's likely little to nothing (probably nothing) under that body shell that resembles anything out of a MINI Countryman, but as far as I know the same can be said of the BMW X3s they looked like when they first ran the Dakar. Those things were never BMWs. X-Raid built a vehicle to compete in the Dakar that would fit under an X3-shaped body shell and used a BMW engine. You know, like lots of others in the Dakar and many other racing series'. Then they altered the same vehicles so they would fit under stretched / bloated Countryman-shaped body shells, also with BMW engines.

I believe that means they're not X3s dressed like MINIs, they're purpose-built Dakar racers dressed like MINIs...just like they were originally purpose-built Dakar racers dressed like X3s.

Am I wrong? I'm happy to admit it if I am ...

Despite what it says above in post #26 and the appearance of the pics below, Robby Gordon did complete the stage today. I'm not sure how much he had to do other than getting the car right side up but once he finished -- more than 5 hours later -- he continued and ran at good speed. Looks like his time between the rest of the way points nearly matched those of the front runners. He may be able to continue tomorrow but will he bother given he's now more than 5 hours off the podium? We'll see.

Nasser Al-Attiyah (Buggy) dominated proceedings today as the Dakar Rally travelled from Nazca to Arequipa, depriving Guerlain Chicherit (Buggy SMG) of stage victory by 36 seconds. StÃ©phane Peterhansel continues to lead overall, however, whilst Sainz, Alvarez and Gordon found themselves out of luckâ€¦

Leg 4: Nazca-Arequipa (717 km)

â€œI know these dunes, but still I was fearful of getting lost in them today,â€ confessed Nasser Al-Attiyah, winner of the 288km special stage, half of which took place in the dunes. â€œI was on my own from start to finish; I didnâ€™t see anybody else or know how my time compared. The navigation really wasnâ€™t easy, so Lucas deserves considerable credit.â€

Behind the Red Bull Buggy, StÃ©phane Peterhansel (Mini/Michelin) played it safe: â€œWe took no risks and made no mistakes. Thatâ€™s a sensible approach to adopt at this stage of the rally; weâ€™ll see later on if we need to push a bit harder.â€ Trailing Al-Attiyah by 1m17s today, Peterhansel has maintained his overall lead, 5m16s clear of his Qatari rival.

Al-Attiyah remained in the interview zone for some time afterwards, nervously awaiting the arrival of Frenchman Guerlain Chicherit, who â€“ according to the intermediary checkpoints â€“ had set the pace for much of the stage. When the NÂ°309 SMG Buggy appeared, however, there was damage to the front suspension: â€œI was driving in Nani Romaâ€™s dust and clouted a hole at Km130.â€ That time loss proved critical, as Guerlain ultimately missed out on the stage win by just 36 seconds.

Giniel de Villiers (Toyota/Michelin) was fourth fastest through the stage, ahead of Nani Roma, whilst Russian Leonid Novitskiy was forced to stop to fix a fuel supply issue. At the end, missing in action were Lucio Alvarez (Toyota) â€“ more than three hours late at the Passage Control â€“, Carlos Sainz (Buggy), who stopped several times and consequently dropped more than two-and-a-half hours, and Robby Gordon, who rolled his Hummer in a dune at Km29.

That ^^^ happened on Stage 3. I forgot to mention it as he just dropped off the live timing list and out of sight. An early report said the co-driver was unhurt but the driver had injuries to back and ribs. Haven't seen anything since.

Leg 5 preview: Adios, Peru! Bienvenidos, Chile! (best-of-rallylive.com)

The fifth day of Dakar action will take crews to Chileâ€™s northernmost town, Arica. The bikes/quads and cars/trucks will tackle different stages.

From Arequipa to Arica, the scenery essentially comprises a succession of deserted plateaux and fertile valleys all the way to Tacna, Peruâ€™s southernmost community. The border post is 100km further on, in the vicinity of Arica, an isolated coastal city situated more than 2,000km from Santiago and 1,500de from Limaâ€¦.

The bikers face a 136km stage which begins just 200 metres from the bivouac. The first 20km to Passage Control 1 includes a great deal of challenging off-road riding. From PC1 to Km110, the trail becomes much rockier, and ultimately smoother from there to the finish. The bike and quad competitors will benefit from a little extra sleep since Joan Barreda will set off at 8:30am. For information, bikers were still showing up at the camp in Arequipa at 10pm yesterday evening!

The car and truck runners will start their day from 7:10am, beginning with a 284km road section to the start of SS5 (172km) across the Pampa de Joya. The first 50 kilometres will feature rocky and occasionally rough tracks, followed by some technically challenging driving from Km53 to PC2 (Km118), before the fast, sandier final section to the finish on the Pacific coast.

That's my understanding. Last year they said the only Mini parts are the headlamps.

Peterhansel retains lead after Stage 5 (iRallylive.com)

Stephane Peterhansel of France, the 10-times Dakar winner in Bikes and Cars - has retained his lead of the Car category after Stage 5 of this year's race, the 172km Arequipa-Arica test, and the event's first full stage in Chile.

Nani Roma of Spain, in his Monster X-Raid All4Racing MINI, set fastest time with 1 hour 49 minutes 40 seconds, but teammate Peterhansel was just 1 minute 23 seconds slower, and that was quite enough for him to keep the lead.

Robby Gordon was third quickest in his Hummer, Giniel De Villiers fourth in his Toyota Hilux and Carlos Sainz fifth. The third All4Racing MINI of Leonid Novistkiy was sixth quickest and Sainz's Qatar Red Bull teammate Nasser Al-Attiyah seventh, having lost over 6 minutes on the stage.

What this all means is that Peterhansel leads, Al-Attiyah is second +9 minutes 54 seconds, De Villiers third +33 minutes 50 seconds and Novistkiy fourth +37 minutes 35 seconds. Sainz is well back, currently 3 hours 20 minutes 27 seconds off the lead.

Olivier Pain of France leads the Bikes on his Yamaha, Marcos Patronelli also on a Yamaha the Quads, with the leading Trucks yet to complete.

Stage winner Roma:

â€œI felt good this morning. We drove well and tried to remain concentrated throughout the special, which was magnificent. It's all going well for us for the moment. Long may it continueâ€¦â€

And Peterhansel:

"It was short but intense! We soon caught up with Chicherit who let us past after a few warnings with the sentinel coups de sentinel... It was really great... After that, we reached a long, snaking track through the mountains, quite slippy but nice from a driving point of view. Then we finished the special stage between sand and fesh-fesh. It was tough and essential to find the right courseâ€¦ Mind you, I had a good hare to follow with Nasser up ahead, who was making good tracks. All in all, it was a very pleasant special to drive, but sometimes it was quite rocky, so we were on the defensive. But the rest was great to driveâ€¦â€

Al-Attiyah:

â€œNot a very strong day. We made a navigation mistake and got lost a little bit, but, okay, we are here nowâ€.

Second R2R car retires from Dakar (iRallylive.com)

A second of the Race2Recovery cars has been forced to retire from the Dakar Rally

Race2Recovery, the team built around disabled Services personnel, is bidding to become the only partly disabled team to complete the event, and to raise funds for Tedworth House, the centre in the UK which treats disabled Servicemen on a lifetime basis.

The Wildcat, crewed by Justin Birchall and Corporal Tom Neathway, suffered mechanical failure after "a punishing run" yesterday in Stage 4. Both men are safe but the vehicle cannot continue.

Earlier this week, the Wildcat of Captain Tony Harris and Cathy Cathy Derousseaux was excluded after missing waypoints, and the team's Truck entry also had to be retired after breakdown.

The team now has just 2 Wildcats remaining, which have started today's Stage 5.

Birchall and Neathway's Wildcat had been donated to the team by the family of the late Gordon Chapman, who passed away before he had chance to use the vehicle in his own plans to race in the Dakar.

Tom Neathway:

â€œWeâ€™re distraught at not being able to continue in the rally and get Gordonâ€™s car to the finish line. We felt very passionate about the fact that we wanted to get to the finish in Gordonâ€™s memory, given the donation of the car from his family after he passed away. However, I hope that we have made the family proud by what we have achieved to date and the fact that the Race2Recovery team is still pushing forward. On a personal note, Iâ€™m gutted that after all our training and hard work we have had to retire, but I hope our efforts in the build-up, and in our four days of racing, have helped inspire other people to challenge themselves, no matter what their disability, illness or adverse circumstances. We will now throw ourselves into supporting the remaining Race2Recovery team members that are still competing.â€

Justin Birchall:

â€œItâ€™s clearly a sad way for myself and Tom to end our rally and weâ€™re very disappointed that weâ€™re not able to compete any further. That said, we have also been reflecting on the achievement that was simply getting to the start line and also the fantastic support that Race2Recovery continues to receive. We will be doing everything we can to support the team as it continues to try and push its way towards the finish lineâ€.

Leg 6 preview: Into the heart of the Atacama (best-of-rallylive.com)

The 2013 Dakar’s survivors face their first taste of the world’s driest desert today (Thursday). A 455km stage will take them to Calama, the city where it has never rained. Temperatures are expected to reach 37Â°C.

Chuquicamata is a gaping 850-metre deep hole in the ground, 4.3km long and 3km wide, and situated in the middle of the Atacama Desert, just 15km from the centre of Calama. The world’s largest opencast copper mine has been producing the metal that has helped to electrify much of the planet since 1915. Yet it is still said to contain some 13 percent of the Earth’s copper reserves. Competitors will pass very close to the mine towards the end of today’s stage.

Indeed, it will be a very long day for them, with a 768km run from Arica, beginning with a 291km ‘road’ section across the Pampa del Tamarugal to the start of SS6, near Iquique. The event doesn’t stop at Iquique this year, but it does visit the region. Two years ago, it was between Calama and Iquique that StÃ©phane Peterhansel claimed BMW’s first stage win against Volkswagen. The next day, however, he experienced a nightmare of a leg between Iquique and Arica!

Today’s stage (455km) is divided into two parts, starting with a 229km run near the Pacific, between Iquique and the Pan-American Highway, followed by 112km across the Atacama Desert after a 97km ‘neutralisation’.

The terrain will vary from the celebrated Iquique dunes up to Km83, followed by around 60km of sweeping tracks. The second part is predominately made up of fesh-fesh, dust and stony dirt trails which will see competitors climb to an altitude of 3,500 metres before reaching Calama.

The first biker will leave Arica at 4:30am and the first car runner at 5:58am. Competitors will also have less sleep because of the two-hour time difference with Chile!

Dakar crash, 2 dead, 7 injured: R2R support vehicle involved (iRallylive.com)

2 people have died, and 7 have been injured in an accident on the 2013 Dakar, involving a support vehicle for the Race2Recovery team.

The event has issued this statement:

TRAFFIC ACCIDENT

A serious accident involving 3 vehicles occurred in Peru on Wednesday 9th January at 21.30 hours (Peru time), 10 kilometres from the border with Chile.

The accident involved a support vehicle with 3 passengers and two taxis, one of them carrying 6 people and the other with 4 people.

One of the two taxis collided head on with the support vehicle, and the second taxi overturned several times in an attempt to avoid the accident.

Unfortunately, two of the people in the first taxi – one of them the driver – died, and 7 others were injured (4 Peruvians and the 3 passengers in the support vehicle). They are being examined in hospitals in Tacna (Peru), where they were taken following the accident.

Assistance coordination has been put in place by the Peruvian authorities and the organisation of the rally, involving 3 local ambulances, a fire engine and several police officers. The organisation has also jointly deployed 2 paramedic ambulance vehicles from the rally and 2 security vehicles.

An Antonov aircraft of the Peruvian police has been put on special alert to transport the injured to Lima, in coordination with the rally’s medical service.

The Peruvian authorities have begun an inquiry into the accident in order to determine the exact causes.

Race2Recovery has issued this statement:

UPDATE ON RACE2RECOVERY DAKAR RALLY TEAM INVOLVED IN SERIOUS ROAD TRAFFIC INCIDENT

Three British members of the Race2Recovery team competing in the Dakar Rally in South America have been badly injured in a road traffic accident, it was confirmed early today. (Thursday)

Their vehicle, a Land Rover Defender (a team support vehicle not a race car) was involved in a head-on collision while travelling in convoy on Day 5 of the challenge with other support vehicles in the town of Tacna, in Peru near the Chilean border.

It is understood that two other vehicles were involved in the accident and two people received fatal injuries and others were injured.

The three Race2Recovery members are Justin Birchall, 40, a team driver and civilian volunteer from Burnley, Lancashire, whose Wildcat vehicle retired earlier in the race; former Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineer and Gulf War and Falklands war veteran Lee Townsend, a team mechanic, from Yate near Bristol; and retired Army Major John Winskill, aged 42, the team logistics expert from Durrington, near Salisbury, Wilts. s

The men were transferred to a local hospital and later flown from Tacna by an Antonov aircraft to hospital in Lima where they are said to be ‘stable and conscious.” Their injuries were described as “non-life-threatening.” Their families have been informed of the accident by other team members.

Team leader Captain Tony Harris said: “Our hearts go out to the families and relatives of those who have died in this tragic accident and we offer them our condolences and sympathy. Our entire team has been struck by the friendliness and support we have received from the Peruvian people since arriving for the Dakar Rally.”
Captain Harris said that the Team had unanimously agreed to continue the challenge with the two remaining Wildcat vehicles.

“The team decided before we even started that we would continue our endeavour. This is obviously a huge shock but we know that we have the blessing of the injured. They want the team to finish,” he said.

The accident is being investigated by the local police in Peru and the team is being supported by the race organisers.

The Race2Recovery team consists of four Wildcat race vehicles and additional support vehicles. The team is made up of British and US servicemen who have been severely injured and lost limbs in conflict and civilian volunteers.

At the end of the first Chilean stage of the 2013 Dakar Rally, Nasser Al-Attiyah has fought back to less than two minutes adrift of StÃ©phane Peterhansel, who retains the overall lead. Robby Gordon went third-quickest again, whilst Nani Roma and Giniel De Villiers found themselves stuck in the sand.

Leg 6: Arica-Calama (768 km)

The end of this sixth stage of the rally was situated at an altitude of 3,000 metres and around 30 kilometres from Calama, very close to Chuquicamata and its mining machinery that made Gordonâ€™s monstrous Hummer appear almost like a scale model in comparison.

The American set the third-fastest time today, despite losing some ground at the start of the stage. In the dunes near Iquique, overall leader StÃ©phane Peterhansel found himself buried in the sand for a few minutes: â€œI got trapped in some very soft sand, 800 metres in front of Nani Roma,â€ the Frenchman explained at the finish. â€œI had to have two efforts at getting out of the dune again, which cost me in the region of three minutes.â€

Roma, for his part, found himself stranded there for quite some time, in the process inadvertently delaying Giniel de Villiers by ten minutes: â€œMy car tipped up in the dune and I saw Nani stuck in the sand below; I had to brake hard to avoid him, and that meant I got stuck too. Later in the stage, we then had to change a wheel,â€ revealed the South African, who nonetheless maintained his third position in the overall standings ahead of Leonid Novitskiy.

In winning the stage with an 8m36s margin over Peterhansel, Nasser Al-Attiyah made significant gains in the overall classification. The Qatari has recovered from his earlier misfortunes to lie less than two minutes shy of the leader. By stark contrast, his team-mate Carlos Sainz was forced to retire from the event with engine problems.

In the â€˜Truckâ€™ class, after Gerard de Rooy had found himself stuck in the sand two days ago and the dramas that befell Ales Loprais, Hans Stacey rolled his Iveco/Michelin in the Iquique dunes. There were fortunately no injuries to either driver or co-driver, but the pair will be going no further. Whilst leading the stage, Eduard Nikolaev (Kamaz) was reported to have stopped at 384km.

Motorcyclist Dies In Second Fatal Dakar Rally-Related Crash This Week (Jalopnik.com)

We have more unfortunate news to report from the 2013 Dakar Rally as a French motorcycle competitor was killed earlier this morning in Chile after he crashed into a police car.

CNN reports that the rider, 25-year-old Thomas Bourgin, was on his way to begin the seventh stage around 8:30 a.m. local time when he collided with a Chilean police vehicle that was traveling in the opposite direction. News reports say Bourgin wasn't killed competing in the race itself, but was going to start the stage of the race between Calama, on the Chilean side of the Andes, to Argentina.

Still, Bourgin is now the third person to die this week in connection with the race, and the second to collide with a vehicle not involved in the competition. As we reported yesterday, two people in a taxi cab were killed when their car was struck by a rally support vehicle in Peru.

Bourgin â€” pictured above at right in an AP photo from Jan. 5 â€” was a native of Saint Etienne. He was in 68th place in this, his first attempt at the Dakar Rally. More than 50 people have been killed since the inaugural Paris to Dakar race in 1978.

Another Race2Recovery Wildcat retires from Dakar (iRallylive.com)

A third Race2Recovery Wildcat race vehicle has been forced to retire from the Dakar after an accident on Stage 6.

Driver Ben Gott and co-driver Staff Sergeant Mark Zambon of the US Marine Corps were on the desert stage in Chile when their Wildcat race vehicle hit a ditch and rolled several times.

The team statement reads:

"Gott requested immediate medical assistance using the in-car safety system. A medical team was scrambled by the event organisers, while a Dutch race crew, competing in the T4 class, was alerted by the organisers as they were close to the scene. The Dutch team was able to right the car and help remove SSgt Zambon from the vehicle. Gott, who complained of back pain, remained in the vehicle until the arrival of the ASO organisersâ€™ medical team."

"Both Gott and SSgt Zambon were treated at the scene. Gott, 35, has suffered injury to his back and was transferred to a local hospital in Calama, Chile, for care and further tests. He has since been discharged. SSgt Zambon, who suffered bruising, was taken for observation at the medical centre at the event bivouac. Relatives of the injured duo have been informed."

The team now has one Wildcat left from its original 4 Car/1 Truck entry: Major Matt Oâ€™Hare, from Earlsfield in London and co-driver Corporal Barney Gillespie, from Ballymena, Northern Ireland will tackle Stage 7 today.
