If you get the date confirmed I think the commitments will increase. This is a great opportunity to get the best tune from the best. Jan woke up my JCW Coupe and I love it!

I wanted to update everyone after speaking to TJ at Detroit Tuned. No email has been sent back yet from Jan at RMW. Reason is because there are rumors he's busy dealing with race cars right now. So a quick turnaround for the email won't be as quick, we might have a answer back from Jan hopefully this upcoming weekend, or next week. I will keep posting all the new information I will receive so everyone stays in loop.

Any other questions you may have, contact Detroit Tuned at 1-(586)-792-6464.

I'm sure Jan is quite busy with the Grand Am race coming up this weekend here at Mid-Ohio.

Another + for getting your car tuned by Jan.
I've had my R56 and my R53 tuned by him.... Both are awesome

Just do it. You won't be disappointed.

Crashton, yeah I figured it. That's why we will probably wait till sometime next week for an official answer. I can't wait to get this official when we have a set date!

Thanks for everyone's comments, I'm sure I will be 100x excited if we make it happen.

You R56 people need to check with Jan before committing to this... The N18 R56's require the ECU to actually be opened up, and the tune flashed directly to the EPOM on the ECU board... In other words, its a pain in the corn hole, and chances are you will be SOL on tune day!

So please contact Chad, or Jan prior to signing up. I am sure they wont mind a few extra calls, just to make sure everything is good to go on tune day. :)

Yeah mine can be tuned. I spoke to Chad about it and an email from Jan said he would want to dyno tune it, no ECU to be sent in. So I'm good but I think he can only tune Pre-February built dates.

I won't be able to get my tuned for some odd reason, I guess Jan just doesn't want to deal with my N18 motor:mad2:. I'm bummed as now I'm going to have to send my ECU in to PAW in FL. Good luck to the rest.

If you have any other questions call Detroit Tuned so you can get your slot for those days!

I don't think it's that he doesn't want to, more like he probably doesn't travel with the equipment to do those ecu's.

Why spend 1/2 a day on one car at a tune party... It leaves more people hanging dry.
Sorry to be the bearer of the bad news, I really would like to see everybody get a good tune, and not go to a canned company.

It's a pain in the ass; and it's really not worth the risk, from the tuner's standpoint.

Many of us have had R53's. Mine heavily modded and was indeed tuned by Jan but at some point the R53's will fade off into the sunset and someone will need to be able to adapt to the changes in the later models. I know it's a PITA as I have had my N18 tuned but c'mon.

As was explained to me and a few others one day by Eric at Helix... The process to "crack" the ECU open is a very fine line between success and "you need a new ECU."

The greatest risk isn't in the tuning... but in heating the case up to be able to pry it open. Because of the low temp solder used inside for the circuitry, you run the risk of opening the ECU and having the circuit bits fall off the board. That would certainly be enough for my panicky tendencies to keep me from attempting it.

    ^^True story^^

Instead of saying man up, I'd put the blame on BMW... There's NO REASON why they have to lock down their ECUs.

I thought BMW was a performance car? So why not encourage it?
Lots of other car manufacturers encourage it... Some even pay out if you are successful in racing.

Hell, if they are worried about warranty issues, just void it if someone's got a tune on the car. Don't they do that already? :eek:ut:

Thats like you pulled the words right out of my mind!

Quite a few companies are upping the security of their ECU's... Chrysler has even made the 2011+ Jeeps... The Wrangler's... Not even the SRT models (which undoubtedly are locked as well) a real pain in the ass to tune. And is there really a High horsepower performance market for a V6 off road vehicle?
They do it to keep people from being able to alter their engineers work, to cut down on warranty claims, and even to cut down on street racing. Think about it... It works. Kids aren't going to buy a decently quick car to race around town in, if they cant really make it any faster.
