Two more hours of design time down...

    Just for this! [emoji12]

Done from scratch... You can guess who it's for, awaiting approval from the man first before sending it to Kristan for conversion to a vector file, then vinyl cutting!

A lot of people don't realize that shooting paint the way I do has a lot more that goes into it than pick a color and spray... A lot of the stuff is drawn either by hand, or in MS Paint! I try not to take other peoples images, unless its a specific request, and even then I search the interwebs for a few hours deciding on just the right one. Lots of emails/PM's/text messages are exchanged before sending the files off to be cut into vinyl!

Then the same for the color scheme...

    Goldsmithy's tank for example:

I knew the color of his car, and that he likes gold... After that, I had to get creative! Early on, before his tank even showed up on my doorstep, we were exchanging ideas, and I brought up the green runs... He liked the idea, but what would be a good green? There are THOUSANDS of green paint codes! He gave me freedom with the project (which I really appreciate) so me, being me, I wanted BRIGHT, kinda oozish green like something along the lines of a comic book... Dodge had just the shade I was looking for as a base, after that, it was getting it mixed with clear enough to be semi-transparent (so the gold flake could pop through) and toning it with a lime green candy, to give a high metallic effect. After that I was stumped again, did he want more black for a more subdued appearance, or more Chili Red to make it a total accent piece? So more time spent online communicating...

The patterns, and layering of the base coats makes the biggest difference, you have to know exactly the look you are going for, before you even mix the paint! Then you better know what you're doing with the spray gun or its going to play Honey Badger, and do what it wants! There are a lot of factors there: air pressure, paint flow rate, paint thickness, and the fan pattern of the spray, as well as getting the distance right to get the right splatter, and no unwanted spray...

On his tank, after the sweet gold underbase was done, and cured, I didn't want to skew the lettering or the pepper with patina splatter, so I had to find something to keep the splatter off of the face of the tank, but get it on the sides where the craziness was going to happen... After that a somewhat thick splatter of Chili red, followed by a couple coats of Chili Red over everything, then a couple quick coats of Jet Black, then more Chili Red... Then after that was dry, its on to the takedown...

You're just leveling out the splatter bumps through all the layers, and taking off just enough to give it that look! There is little to no room for error, and one slip in the wrong spot, or too much pressure on the sandpaper, and its start back over, because you really cant do anything to touch it up!

It's the little things that matter, you need to practice constantly!

For me, I practice my droplet techniques and adjustments at work, on their stuff and on their dime! [emoji12] I actually shot some fuse box doors yesterday, that I nailed the texture better than I have in a long time! (The pictures are hard to see, but look at that pattern! If this was one of my pieces, that would be going to one happy owner! [emoji2])

Almost dry enough to start putting it back together. [emoji2]

The roof has a bit of dust and glue residue nibs which I would normally level and re clear out, but since I am technically paying him to do this, I'm saying one word and it strongly resembles BUCKET! But it does look good though. [emoji2]

Updating as I go... Keep in mind this is just a practice piece, and I'm way out of practice! [emoji12]

Before: (As a reference in garage lighting) Basecoat is the original Dark Silver that the Rat was originally painted...

After round 1 of shading... (Midnight Grey leftovers from the Porker)

Shading round 2: (Pure Silver highlights)

Then a little aging with some candy colors: (There's actually 3 colors of candy pearl used, they should be more visible after clearcoat)

Break Time as it dries, then its time to pull some of the masking, and go back through with some Jet Black. [emoji12]

Black DONE! Now to pull the rest of the masking, then to bust out the big gun, and clearcoat it. [emoji2]

Clearcoat is on... (Full of dust, but I can level it all out and re-clear it when I can put some water on the floor.)

Now for some of the "not mine" work I have recently done... [emoji41]

    Sometimes, people go pink...

Yep not ashamed to admit it, I have done it...

Even wore them around town for the morning before they were delivered to the owner! [emoji12]

But they look much better on the right car... [emoji41]

They are also done in a candy, so the color shifts quite a bit. [emoji6]

The actual base for the new rust is on! It took FOREVER, but should look sweet when done.

Started with a 2 layer color base...

    Before:

    After the take down process:

Then a very healthy layer of bronze and black flake...

And lastly, leveled the flake with a gold/brown candy pearl...

Trust me, in the sun, a lot of the detail of the color base shows through the candy. [emoji6]

Next, after I catch some fresh air, that layer needs wet sanded down a bit, then its spitting different rust colors for a few minutes. After that would be a simple color coat, but no! I am going a bit more intricate with a color coat this time... Always the EFFING hard way! [emoji12]

    That's the plan!
I can use them as color/pattern samples for the people who can actually come to the shop. Making them into functional furniture is just a bonus! [emoji12]

And done for the night... Waiting for it to set, so I can pull the Rat back in.

The patina around the edges will be a bit heavier this time around... [emoji12]

Tomorrow comes the stencils and blue's... Hopefully I can get a good chunk done before she gets here... That way she doesn't have to sit around and watch me work all night! [emoji12]

This time around I will be shooting the flake mid day Saturday, so its nice and hot in the garage when I do it!

This is a job I didn't have to do, because I am returning over the cost of the car to its owner. Long story short, its for Chris (the lamp guy) and originally this was written off as a loss, because the cheap Chinese plastic was melting with the thiner I used. [emoji20]

But to prove that I'm not the [emoji206]HOLE he thinks I am, I spent about 3 days getting the body back straight and smooth and it's getting done and returned tomorrow along with his $50 and steering wheel from the lamp project.

The body was yellow with a white roof and silver wheels, he wanted it to match his R56... Sparkling Silver body, black roof and wheels. [emoji2]

The Sparkling Silver was done last week with no pictures, but today all the black gets done, my signature added to the roof, and then clearcoat.
