Looking for designs and color schemes that people would buy, and would go with their car... Not many of us have a rusty MINI. I like the Idea that MRNTD suggested, and I can go somewhat crazy under a red candy pearl, so that one might make it to the table. Just need to think about the layering, and layout.
That is cool! But would it sell? Also doing big graphics on something with a complex curvature like mirrors is very difficult, something like that would be more suited to an air box, or set of fenders.
I'm sure someone would be willing to put an original piece of Dick art on their car. It would probably look better on something with a flatter surface.
Dick, buy a bunch of mirror caps, all models, from Colin's source in Cali. They should be cheap, they'll be used. The dragon mirror idea is a good one...Mirror caps are easy to install, people can have them for multiple occasions. The British flag thing is very cool, but it's more of a niche thing, you need to find the right person. Mirror caps, people can swap them out for the dragon. Or Halloween. Or Christmas. Lots to do there....
Mirror caps are quick and relatively easy to do, but I only have the two sets. It helps me get the overall design right if I can probe around in the buyers head a bit though... So anybody with an R60 or a non powerfold R56 have any color suggestions?
I've toyed with the idea of a Union Jack flag on a mirror cap, but because of the speed the edges are worn and tattered. Know I mean Rick?
That idea could work Jim, but even using the stencils, I need more time behind an airbrush to get all the coloring done right... With that said, guess what I'm currently practicing?
Just got the masking done on a test panel... Thinking on doing one of the mirror cap sets in a style like this. It will look pretty crazy after all the shading is done with the airbrush... For the mirror caps, that will be the base layer, and have a colored candy / transparent color coat over the top. Tomorrow since I don't have anything else to do, I'm going to drag a propane bottle into the garage and shade this in.
Updating as I go... Keep in mind this is just a practice piece, and I'm way out of practice! Before: (As a reference in garage lighting) Basecoat is the original Dark Silver that the Rat was originally painted... After round 1 of shading... (Midnight Grey leftovers from the Porker) Shading round 2: (Pure Silver highlights) Then a little aging with some candy colors: (There's actually 3 colors of candy pearl used, they should be more visible after clearcoat) Break Time as it dries, then its time to pull some of the masking, and go back through with some Jet Black. Black DONE! Now to pull the rest of the masking, then to bust out the big gun, and clearcoat it. Clearcoat is on... (Full of dust, but I can level it all out and re-clear it when I can put some water on the floor.)
Putting up a couple closeups of that fender to show some of the detail before I sand all that paint off and do something else... I know, there's a lot of dust and imperfections with the clearcoat, didn't really care, never planned on keeping this piece.
That is pretty cool. I still think you should use an entire car as your canvas, you've done it once....
I like your thinking! That being said, I have a few kinks to work out with this pattern first... You've got to count that this was just a shading test panel over a single color base, and limited use of materials... We will be seeing more of this style.
Thanks MRNTD, I've still got some work to do in order to get the full 3D effects right, but It's not far off.
Looking at that panel reminded me of the rivets and steel on WW2 planes which then made me think of a WW2 Spitfire look on a MINI (roundels on both side could be used for magnetic racing numbers). Could either give it a stainless steel look or do one of the various camo patterns that were used.
