    Nice they look effing awesome. Oh and I have lots of silky soft wax and MF towels I am not using since I have stopped using wax and made the switch to ceramic coatings.

    No lotion and paper towels for me. :lol:

    Did you guys think I took the weekend off?

    NOPE! I'm actually getting pretty slammed since Dave's mirrors!

    So far I have 4 other sets of mirror caps that are tentative. (Mostly depending on how much $$$ people have left after MTTS.)
    I talked with a guy here about some side scuttles for his Paceman.
    I also have some small local stuff in the works that will probably fall through, but you never know...
    And a few personal projects I want to get done that keep getting back burnered...
    Along with new products to test!

    Oh and a crazy full car camo job to do on a Subaru! Maybe even my first motorcycle job this winter!

    Next weekend I need to go pick up supplies, because a month ago, I was just going to do the Subi and call things good for a little while, so I ran myself short on everything.

    This weekend I went to the store with the Subaru guy, and started going through color books trying to find a color that would give his car the pop we want in the graphics. After a couple hours of looking, we narrowed it down to two... A bright obnoxious orange, and a more subtle but still obnoxious green.
    Today, I shot his second tester panel to test all the new colors, compare the green to the orange, and to test the new process of applying the camo...
    Since this was just a color/spray pattern test, I went small with it and used my normal fender test panel.

    We've decided on green... But... Not that one! We're going to look for something a little brighter, and a little more yellow than that one, but with that level of metallic.
    Other than that, I may go a little heavier with the splatter in the camo blotches, but thats it! Now it's redoing the hood when we pick the right green.

    Oh and sometimes people hit me with random paint questions, and I can't help but have a little fun with them...

    There is no such thing as a bright, obnoxious, pale, dark, or ugly orange! I adore burnt and flame orange and my S has neon orange bonnet stripes! :Thumbsup:

    Well folks, I have some news about Dick's Garage Custom Paintwerks...

    Most of you know that my parents live in my house full time due to my moms health issues, and needing to be close to all of her doctors... My Dad is finally going to take his retirement, but he wants to start building things out of wood again in the garage. Everyone knows how much of a mess wood work makes, and that it takes a lot to keep the saw dust to a minimum. This could ruin me painting anything for the rest of my time here...

    However, last night the three of us sat down and had a little talk, and they hit me with a proposal...

    Expand the garage!

    Keep what's already there as is, and build an addition onto it in the back corner... The plan is a 10X10 room, that will be set up as a professional paint booth and sealed off from the main garage by a double door system (a short hallway with a door on both ends) to keep the dust out. With my main goal of the shop being custom trim pieces and motorcycles, this works perfect for me! Probably a lot better than it is now, always having to fight the dust of an oversized, old, and drafty garage being used as a paint booth as well as everything else I do out there.

    10X10 seems small at just 100 sq/ft, but it works better for a few reasons:

    1) I never intended on making the shop into a full on auto paint center for cars... I actually don't like doing full car paintjobs as much as I like the small custom stuff. Granted I will take on the occasional full car job, and that's still going to have to be done in the main shop as always, after a lot of cleanup depending on how much time my dad spends out there.

    2) It can be totally sealed and draft/dust free, meaning my paintwork will be able to come out better than ever more easily.

    3) Setting up a proper low pressure ventilation system in a paint booth that small is cheap, and easy to do when you're starting from scratch.

    4) Better lighting in the small area with no shadows or dark spots to work around, and it will help having the inside finished and painted white to brighten things up even more.

    5) A fully insulated 100 sq/ft room is easy to keep warm in the cold months when I normally have to shut things down. A couple heat lamps would take care of it!

    6) Not to mention, it can easily be made into a tool/storage room adding value to the house when I can finally sell this place.

    My parents for once are showing some real support, and have offered to cover most of the cost except for the stuff I need to make it functional as a paint booth! Which is a first, and they want to start construction next spring, so we have time to plan everything out and make sure it will work. Outside of the lighting, ventilation, and plumbing for the air system, there really isn't much to it though, just a basic windowless room with some hooks in the ceiling to hang parts from, and reversing my original plan in the main shop to put the compressor room on the opposite side of the garage.

    I'm looking forward to this! When the time comes, I will probably post the entire build from the ground up.

    Sounds like a plan. You might want to check zoning and epa if you're going ramp it up. Some people might consider it beyond "painting in your garage" and give you carp.

    Another reason for the 100 sq/ft or less... No build permit needed, no inspectors, and as far as anyone can tell from the outside its a tool/storage room.

    Not that permits are a bad thing but doing a a 10x10 space isn't rocket science !! Should be fun project and will make your painting endeavors easier for you. :Thumbsup:

    And better for everyone else!

    The only thing that's really going into it other than a bare room outside of the air plumbing, ventilation, and lighting is a small supply cabinet, a cabinet for the distribution tank, and a mixing table all built down one wall.

    Itis 120 sqft before you need a building permit in the county I live in.

    Not long ago, you didn't need a building permit unless there was a bathroom in the structure.

    Ahh progress!

    Back to the PAINT!!!

    Today I finished up Dave.0's stuff!

    After a long ordeal first with the decals, then getting my hands on some brand new emblems, along with everything that is currently going on at home, they are finally DONE and I will ship them out next Friday. Thanks for understanding why everything took so long Dave, I wish everyone could.

    Any who... Started with brand new from the dealer emblems.

    Properly prepped the chrome, and gave them a good cleaning before shooting them with the primers...

    At the same time, I didn't want to waste materials by shooting something so small, so I decided to do some work on Grace's mirror caps... I'm pretty sure the design team had it in mind when they designed the 1 series BMW, but I can see why the production team squashed the idea. It took over an hour and a half to lay down the fine line tape on the edge of the indented area in the caps!

    Got it all really close to a perfect match! +/- 1/32"

    Finished off the masking took like 20 minutes!

    Then the Jet Black basecoat went on before another meeting with a contractor for my parents place...

    Then after the pong break, my signatures were applied in a blue candy to my mirrors, and Dave's emblems got a round of clear before laying his vinyl graphics... (This lets the vinyl have a smooth surface to stick to, and it will be totally encapsulated in clearcoat.)

    It took 3 attempts to get the vinyl centered and level on the front emblem, and 4 for the rear, which isn't perfectly centered, but close enough that you really gotta get close to notice.

    Then everything got its final clearcoat which is drying as I type this... The clear on the emblems is SUPER THICK!!!

    Not to be a wet blanket, but I see a couple things to consider.

    1. Safety. Do you have it in your budget to vent the room to protect your safety? Paint booths are full of volatile chemicals. They can hurt you, and they can, well, explode in a nasty fireball.

    2. Will your insurance company cover you if you build without a building permit and code inspection? It may be legal to build without a permit and inspection, but that doesn't mean you will be covered if your garage burns to the ground if you build an addition without a building permit and code inspection.

    Going "by the book" is not always expensive, and can actually save your arse if something bad happens. Being able to tell the insurance company, "I had a permit and my addition passed code inspection" can make the difference between getting paid and getting nothing.

    I got a building permit when I replaced my water heater, and a city code inspector inspected and signed off on the finished work. It cost me about fifty bucks, but if that thing burns my house down, my insurance company has no choice but to pay.

    Just something to think about.
