Read the threads. You CAN NOT use the original cap WITHOUT the cage, with EITHER new style or old style filters.

You CAN NOT use a new style cap with an old style housing, with either style filter.

You CAN use old style cap, intact with the cage with either old or new style filter.

    Hmmmmmm....

Now that's an answer. But, as I noted in a post somewhere in this thread, the threads out there (different sites than this one) are not nearly as definitive as that which you've plotted out here. ... That is a FACT! I imagine your answer, essentially, is an aggregate of all that's been posted, but with a healthy dose of your own, personal logic and know how added. Forget about the housing as that's not an issue: The posts do NOT say you CAN'T use your old filter cap without the cage when you use the new (i.e., as of 7/2004) filters. In fact, one prominent one says that you can ditch the cage as long as you're using the new filter type. Your definitive conclusion, again, was YOUR conclusion ... and I appreciate it -- though I'm STILL not sure it's correct. AFTER ALL, Blimey, why would a new filter, as of 7/2004, be purposely engineered, designed, and manufactured with a rigid core IF NOT to replace the problematic OEM cage that came with the vehicle??? Please give that some thought and let me know your thougts. I really appreciate, in advance, your sticking with this one. It's obviously an "I don't care" issue for those whose MINIs were made after ~ 2005. ..

From what I've read, your only choice is to replace the old style filter assembly with the newer style.

It's a FACT that some folks in those threads reported low oil pressure lights when using the original cap, without the core, with the new filters.

It's also a FACT that some folks in those threads reported low oil pressure lights when using the new cap, with the old housing, with the new filters.

It's also a FACT that more than one actual professional mini mechanic in those threads (who are known to me, and who's experience I trust) said that you have to change the housing, to use the new cap.

I also know from looking at the parts, that the new cap is constructed quite differently from the old cap, and has an allow "cylinder" that sticks into the paper end of the filter to create a good seal. The old cap doesn't have that. So I'm confident the new-style filters will not seal properly inside the housings with the old-style cap, if the core is not used.

Perhaps some folks got lucky and got it sealed "good enough" to seem to work. Or perhaps the filter wasn't seated on the cap cylinder sufficiently, and was still able to push the valves in the housing and trick it into thinking it was working. But when the mechanics in those threads say "doesn't work", I believe them.

I do have the benefit of 10 years on these forums, to know who to listen to, and who to ignore. I understand you don't have that.

... Kind of wish you had stopped at Goodbye! Don't really care about your status as a 10-year veteran of the forum(s) and your ability to trust, not trust... That's irrelevant to me, understand? You continually don't answer a simple question, but nonetheless post responses, and then get miffed when someone calls you out on it. Either give definitive information or keep your voice muffled. No need to stir bad sentiment, bro! No response needed, nor encouraged. Consider the matter closed!

    OK.
    Bye bye.
I suggest you take a reading comprehension course sometime. It would probably serve you well in life.
And maybe some counseling on how to take good advice when you're given it.
And to respect those with the experience and goodwill to provide it.
Because there was NOTHING to gain from any of this, for any of us here, except to try to help you. All you did was refuse to listen, argue with us, refuse to accept facts, read your own wishful thinking into everything we provided, and then insult me when I tried to help once again with more FACTS you seem to be fond of.

On behalf of the Motoring Alliance community... get bent.

I'm just catching up on this thread, and it seemed pretty clear to me.

What are you going to try, Michael?

Michael, please post whatever configuration you come up on the cheap. Like you say...we need more facts. Oh, and I also suspect that you will need rod/cam bearings in your future. Where's the place to get the cheapest ones?

    Well that was fun.

To sum up what we've learned here.

Experience doesn't matter. The entire forum idea where the collective learns from experience has now been debunked as a fraud.

With that, there is no more need for this thread to continue.

    It's closed.
