Keep in mind the 8Gb iphone is NOT a 4S. The 4S has improved antenna, camera, etc...
You can compare the features here.

Are you just looking to get a phone or do you have a lot of digital music?

The cost of the phone really is negligible when you view it over that period. Might as well get the 16 GB 4GS rather than saving a few dollars up front. You're going to be spending about $2000 over the life of the phone anyway, wether you get a free with contract one or a 16 GB 4GS. Might as well get the nice one. -
Why would anybody buy the previous gen iphone when they can get the new one for $100.00 more. Each generation has been better then its predecessor. You are going to be spending lots of money each month get the new phone with better camera, battery and the new features. Just my 2 cents.

Well, I really like my iPhone 4 8GB. As I am new to the smart phone world, this thing is really a step up from my BB and does all I need it to do, plus some. Perhaps in two years I'll be ready for the iPhone 5.

Now in MM's case, it is an old guy, with a new toy who only thinks he understands how it works.

I found a 'justa phone' about a year ago. My mother-in-law kept bugging me with questions about her pay-as-you-go phone and where her minutes were going / how to buy more minutes / etc. I got a freebie 'justa' and pay the $12/month to add her to my minutes. The $12/month is well worth the time savings, not to have to answer those questions about a phone and system I've never used!
The phone has numbers, a green button to talk and a red button to hang up. It has 3 speed-dial buttons (which I pre-configured to call her 3 kids) and that's it!
If you can't find one that you like, try looking on eBay. Just make sure that it works on the network you wanna use. I bought an unlocked phone to use when we went to Europe for a few weeks a while back... made life much easier. -

My wife still uses one of these... the Rolls Royce of 'justa' phones:
The original sticker price was over $800 on the Nokia 8800, I think (we got it under $200 a few years later at a 60% closeout of an electronics store). It feels like a solid brick of stainless steel and all of the ring tones were composed specifically for just that one phone (yes... a real composer writing custom ring tones). What would normally be a plastic screen cover is made from a watch crystal.
Before the iPhone came out, whenever you saw some Hollywood starlet chatting on the phone, she probably had one of these suckers in her hand. No email, a crappy camera that you would never use and you can barely send text messages, but it looks cool and feels great in your hand. It even sounds cool when you slide it open. -

There is a lot to be said for using a well designed simple device that does one thing very very well.
