That should be the rule everywhere! Pretty sure everybody here grew up with their parents saying "stay out of the street or you're going to get hit!" Now all of a sudden the cars aren't supposed to be the ones on the road?
We have so many effing paved bike trails and path around here paid for with our Taxes there really is no reason for a cyclist to be on the roads. Especially this time of the year.
Well, I guess we're going down this road... See for yourself right here: http://www.odot.state.or.us/forms/dmv/37.pdf It's incredible how quick people are to discount the lives of others just because getting to their destination is more important. For a 'friendly' MINI forum, you guys are awfully hostile.
Argumentative is the adjective, hostile implies they are out to get you! I believe the this phrase might sum it up, 'drive or ride with commons sense'!
This all started when Dave cast out a joke ( a FRIENDLY jabbing) and you took it AWFULLY serious. If you don't get jabbed on here or you don't take it well.....well....
Understood that Dave was poking fun, but others seem to be pretty serious about their hostility towards bicyclists. As someone who's nearly been run over, even while riding on the shoulder of the road, I don't take the whole 'car vs. bicyclist' thing as a laughing matter.
Prozac.....that makes everything better at my age and keeps me from taking anything too serious. Now.....get off my lawn!
Did you read the second sentence under bikes? And you can be sure that the actual language of the statutes are a little more succinct than what the drivers manual states. I know, because my job req's interaction with bike riders and I have had to have the local law enforcement come to "educate" those riders who feel that they are entitled to all areas of the road whether riding alone or in a peloton.
I thoroughly read the whole section, and what it all boils down to, is drivers need to give cyclists room, whether it be for parked cars, roadside hazards, or oncoming vehicles that don't allow enough room to safely pass. And conversely, cyclists need to recognize that as users of the road, they are subject to the same laws and regulations as drivers of motor vehicles. FWIW, I do stop at stop signs, signal when turning or changing lanes, and stay on the proper side of the road. I have exceeded the speed limit, though... And succinct = short... I think you meant to say that the actual laws were more long-winded than the drivers manual states.
Here's my take... In the first paragraph under Bicycles, it states that they will be treated as a motor vehicle... Say you're driving a lifted 1988 Suzuki Samurai that can barely turn its 33" tires on flat ground, but you are going up a steep mountain grade and cant even get out of first gear and are putting along at 5MPH... You notice a line of cars forming behind you in your mirrors, what do you do? FFS, you pull off the road, stop and let the traffic go around! Cyclists wont do this in CO for some reason! They will plant themselves weaving in the lane at a snails pace trying to pedal up the mountain not caring if there is a mile long line of cars behind them who just want to be able to get where they are going. Why not do the respectable thing, stop your bike and let traffic pass. They argue "it ruins the workout, because their heart rate will drop"... Ok so one of the cars in the line behind you contains a mother to be in labor... Sorry to "ruin your workout" but you can get a problem free workout in a gym, prego cant have a baby by herself in a car trapped behind you.
If you're pedaling at a snails pace and weaving across the entire lane, you have no business climbing that hill on a bicycle. Try an easier hill first, fatty.
My point exactly! Maybe its all the Colorado cyclists who think they are Lance Armstrong who ruined my perspective on the whole debate. But in all actuality if a cyclist shows me respect by noticing I am there, and moving out of the way, I will take the entire oncoming lane (if sightline and terrain permits) to go around them. Its the inconsiderate who ruin it for everybody.
I am sorry what.... The Victoria Secret runway model show is on CBS right now. :drool What are we talking about again.....
