I use Castrol Edge 0-30w for my JCW

    I am the UK

Dealership recommend that you use 0-30w

Yup and they are rated for BMW's (BMW LL-01) for ALL BMW MOTORS INCLUDING M's ////

The only reason Amsoil, along with other high quality oils, are not on the "official" BMW / MINI is they will not pay to be on the "official" list.

    It's all about oil sales.

:cornut: I remember back in '69-'72 when I worked in the auto parts business; I was told that racing oil was only for racing and only for 1 race at a time. It was made specifically to be run at high temp and high RPMs for 1-4hrs and then changed. That it was not designed for start and stop driving over months and thousands of miles. Have times changed and this is not true any more? 'Splain on me, what's current thought on this?:cornut:

Guess I talked to the same guy Jason. Always ran Valvoline racing oil & changed oil before every race weekend. Figured an oil change was a lot cheaper that an engine rebuild.

When we rallied we also started each even with new Valvoline racing oil in the sump. We didn't change after 4 hours though. That would have required 5 oil changes. :smile5:

Not a good idea to use "Racing" oils as they WILL not have a long service life compared to the standard oils.

I know the oils that I use today for my street cars are much better than the racing oils of years past. That goes for most things these days.

+3  Except for the dealer-provided changes, this is all I've ever used in all of my MINIs (R50, R56 turbo, and R59 non-turbo).

Never had a lube-related maintenance issue, nor have I ever experienced detectable oil consumption (recognizing that this may have absolutely nothing to do with oil type/quality).

:cornut: Thanks to Metalman, Crashton, ScottinBend, and all the others for the info. Racing Oil is still only for racing and I'll change to 0w40 weight staying with Castrol or Mobile1 synthetic most severe. 0w40 might be 'just the ticket' for Texas 110f Summers.

You know it is so funny. When you have an oil discussion over on the Porsche forums it is best to wear your Teflon suit as the mud (I am being nice here) will start slinging pretty quickly. It looks like the master list has a lot of options and I did notice that Amsoil is not on that list, but neither was Redline or Motul. So I think a high quality 0W-30, 5W-30 or 5@-40 is a pretty safe bet. I will keep you all posted as the car gets a steady diet of 5@-40 Redline European Blend.

Oil, I run 5W-40 Full Synthetic

I switched to Shell Rotella T6 Full Synthetic 5W-40 Motor Oil at about 15,000 miles,
I have my reasons, not arguing with anyone but I run it in everything I own.

Not to argue, but I have read nothing but good things about that oil. Bet you weren't expecting that.

Mobil 1 0W-40 is on the Recommended list of Porsche, Mercedes, and MINI and I own one of each. So I keep a large stock of this stuff and it has worked quite well in all three cars.

The race oils don't have the detergents that regular or commercial grade motor. The new Amsoil blend is a better blend and longer lasting blend of oils same as the Royal purple or Red Line. Like was stated earlier they didn't want to pay to have thier oils added to the list so they was left off.

......and they don't do any tests to verify they meet any spec's at all. They do say that they can be used where certain oil spec's are recommended, but no where do they say that their oils have been tested or meet any spec's.
