The only drive I sign up for is the morning Donut Drive all the rest I let the new people attending sign up for.

Plus this way I don't have to be anywhere at anytime and I am free to run the Dragon or a day long lunch run with friends. After we all get back we wash the cars and drink some beers ( ok LOTS OF BEER) make an unhealthy dinner. It is a vacation after all.

One thing that really pisses me off is when people sign up for a run and don't show for that run. This seems to have increased the last few years, but has always occurred though. Last year we wanted t make one particular run, we knew it was full but decided to show up anyway. 30 people registered only 16 showed up for the run. Not sure how to prevent this and I totally understand things come up, but dang people. Don't sign up for crap you know you ain't gonna make!

You mean you can't find any good drives? The area is chock full of them Jeff. No reason you & a few cronies couldn't do a drive. I enjoy finding my own way places, it is like being on a mission of discovery. Remember the old saying (Discover America get lost on a rally). :cornut:

Unfortunately, my "forever" ends with this MOTD, Chuck. It's been a fun ride and I've met a lot of people who have become good friends, as well as a few "bumps in the road" that the world can do without...lol.

What I have done a few times is just take off usually in a east or south and go until you are totally lost then set Garmin to return to Fontana and see where it takes you. You can find some interesting roads that way.

^^^^ FYI Most people do not drive Hellbender or the Dragon on Saturday because of high traffic, police.

No, not planning on being on the Dragon on a Saturday, lots of other great roads in the area, a few I have not driven, yet! :)

I agree, bumper to bumper with popos is not a great combo. :sosp:

Anybody know what gives with the jumbled dates for sign up? Per an earlier post in this thread, I also noticed that the sign up dates for activities had changed from 1/11, which is what was showing when I registered on 1/3(I got online just after midnight today and noticed the sign up dates had changed to 1/12). So, I was going to get back online just after midnight tomorrow, 1/12.

I just went in and checked for grins, and apparently, they opened the sign-ups sometime on 1/11-today anyway? Virtually everything we were going to sign up for is closed.

I know this sounds like whining, and I know the MOTD director does all of this in his spare time and doesn't get paid for it, but I just hate it when I do everything according to instructions and get shut out, you know? :cryin:

It was going to be our first MOTD and I was determined to get locked in to the runs we really wanted to do....bummer....maybe next year.

Jeff, sign up for the Donut Run. We always spend the days doing freestyle runs which I'm sure you will be attending. With 2 MoM houses there is plenty to do.

This year it's let the NEWBIEs sign up and get the experience.
I am going to hang back and taking pictures and maybe do some exploring of "Uncharted Waters" with some friends. Lets see what else is out there.

Yep, I'm getting there the MOnday before to run the bikes for a few days on Hellbender(my favorite road there, all the way in into SC-love it) and all the others, before the crowd gets in on Wed/Thu. Carolyn will drive Checkers down Wed afternoon.

I figure most of the runs from Wednesday through the weekend will simply be following the Mini in front of you and I'm sure there will ALWAYS be a Mini in front of you:D

Some times it is better to take any run with a few friends at your own pace rather than a huge follow the leader run. (Just me)

Hellbender is 28 from Johnson Gap to Deals Gap.

Johnson Gap is where 28 and 143 meet. Deals Gap is where 28 and 129 meet. It's about 22 miles in length. The road is very varied, from sweepers to real tight stuff. Lots of elevation changes too.

Named after a giant Salamander that is indigenous to the area.

The website says now that they open on the 12th. I'm doing the Donut Run and one of the Brewery Drives. The traditional MoM registration volunteer shift is Thursday AM with Mr. And Mrs. Jim.

I'll drive thru the Dragon to Fontana on Tuesday and back thru the Dragon from Fontana to home on Saturday. While in NC, I'll drive the area's roads...not signing up for any particular drives and thus eliminating the congested group drives. I DO have one particular drive in mind, but it fills fast so I don't want to jeopardize my chances of signing up quite yet.

Early morning both of those roads are fine. Hellbender doesn't seem to see the same traffic that the Dragon does. At least that has been my experience. I tend to only use those roads when I have to. There are so many roads great roads with little traffic to enjoy.
