I'm obviously an extremely interested bystander and track all of the online forums for any hint of the so called "death rattle" being inherited by the N18 power plant. I'm happy to report that, thus far, there hasn't been a single, credible, documented instance that I've run across. There was a bit of a scare for a short while associated with the turbo waste gate chatter that sometimes exists for about 45 sec after start-up in certain environmental conditions, but nothing yet related to the death rattle "smouldering gun" valve timing components. *fingers remain crossed* *knocks on wood* BTW, if you can get THAT THING in your pants you're a far better man than I. :arf:
It was "banished" with the 2010 models. My Dad needed his replaced on his '08 MCSa. No such issue on mine. 47,8XXmiles and counting.
Redbeard- I wish you continued good luck. To me that is not high miles, but it is on the way there. Keep us informed as the miles accumulate.
Does this sound like the rattle? or normal injector/valve noise? 2011 MCS.. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJN0BUXJtYk]MINI Cooper S - stock motor - YouTube[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSMvqSidqhk[/ame]
68,000 miles on my '09 JCW that rattled once and the dealer gave it "the fix". that was at 15,000 miles. So far...so good:cornut:
In the interest of making this thread a comprehensive reference, here's an excellent example of the '11 MCS turbo waste gate chatter (i.e., NOT the "death rattle")... [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRY30OVgPSY&feature=player_embedded]2011 R56 Mini Cooper S engine rattle - YouTube[/ame] ...and I've attached SIM 18-01-10 that describes it.
For the first ~40 seconds it's waste gate. The noise completely disappears once the valve is allowed to relax from the full open position. Then you're left with all of the normal injector tapping we've grown to know and love.
