I used a broken toothpick for the same purpose. The rough broken edge catches the lint particles great and since it is wood there are no worries about scratching any metallic connectors.

It will clean any corrosion off the contacts, for sure.....if you use it sparingly I can't think of anything it would hurt.....

Thanks, I've been having troubles with charging no matter which of the myriad of cables I've used. Cleaning the port looks to have been fixed.

Indented connections are the hardest to get corrosion off. Your solution is the best for that. On connections that are exposed I just use an eraser.
