Asking anyone else who watched the Hamilton - Stewart car swap last night, is "BORING" a pretty good 1-word description or is it just me?

The announcers from the two series' were all trying way too hard to be pleasant and complimentary. The guys asking questions of the drivers seemed to have zero imagination, no interviewing skills. The only fun part was Hamilton right after he got out of Stewart's car. The only smile I got from watching Stewart was during the Mobil 1 commercial where he wedges himself into the F1 car.

I live ~2 hours from Watkins Glen and the lack of access, weather and generally no promotion of this kept me from going.

After watching it last night I am glad I didn't.

The biggest problem for the driving itself is the track started out wet and was drying as they went but they spent the whole time on wet weather tires. Best line from Stewart was "It's fun to have downforce again." Sam Posey's short Watkins Glen history segments with old video were pretty good but otherwise this is probably the best segment. I checked a bunch of them on YouTube and the idiots seem to have cut every second of the best part with Hamilton finishing up with a donut and then getting out of the car with a big grin and gushing about how fun it was.

I tried to DVR the seat swap but it ran past the allotted 30 minutes. Oh well. Would have been cooler to watch in the dry, maybe with some other cars out there running qualifying laps so you get a feel for how fast they're actually going.

Same here. But I found a rerun, added 2 hours of recording time to that and will try it again. Seeing the stock car and an F1 car side by side is "weird". Talk about a size differential.

I have it on the DVR, it runs 1 full hour including the commercials. FWIW, you can see all but that bit with Hamilton's emergence from Stewart's car in segments on YouTube, in HD and w/out all the commercials.

Trulli reveals unusual Montreal problem (gpupdate.net)

Jarno Trulli has explained how he experienced a somewhat bizarre end to the Canadian Grand Prix two weekends ago. On his way to finishing 16th and a lap down, as the only Lotus to reach the chequered flag, the Italian was forced to drive with his carâ€™s inerter swinging inside the cockpit.

â€œI left a very wet Canada and headed to my home in Miami for a few days of sun before returning to Europe for the next race,â€ Trulli explains ahead of this weekendâ€™s European Grand Prix in Valencia. â€œDespite the finishing position in Canada I was really pleased with my performance there across the whole weekend.

â€œIt was a tough race, for sure, and Iâ€™ve already said that I think the FIA played it just right; at times it was obvious that the cars were undriveable in the conditions, so when they stopped the race and brought out the Safety Cars it was exactly the right times to do so.

â€œI finished the race with the inerter dangling around between my legs â€“ the guys on the pit wall were urging me to bring it home and, while it would have been easier to park it, itâ€™s times like that when you have to do whatever you can to help the team.

â€œHaving a large lump of metal hanging about was definitely holding me back and I wasnâ€™t able to push as hard as Iâ€™d have liked, but it was still pretty satisfying to catch the guys ahead and finish just behind them as we crosed the line.â€

F1 to switch to V6 engines â€“ but not until 2014 (crash.net)

Following a meeting of the F1 Commission near Heathrow today (Wednesday), it has finally been resolved that â€“ pending approval from the FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) â€“ the sport will switch from V8 power to V6 single-turbos from 2014, a year later than the current era had been due to end.

FIA President Jean Todt has spent months pushing for the introduction of turbocharged, four-cylinder 1.6-litre units from 2013 onwards, advocating the need for F1 to be more sustainable and environmentally accountable. The Frenchman's plans were persistently opposed, however, by the sport's commercial rights-holder Bernie Ecclestone â€“ who made little secret of his distaste for the so-called 'greener' hybrid technology â€“ and manufacturers, with only Renault entirely on-board.

Although Todt had vowed to stand firm, it appears the ex-Ferrari team principal has now bowed to the mounting pressure â€“ not least from his former employer, which largely echoed Ecclestone's views in arguing that his proposals bore no relevance to their road-going cars â€“ with the confirmation that a compromise has been reached to delay the advent of the new engine formula until 2014, and to plump for 1.6-litre V6s rather than four-cylinder powerplants to replace the current gas-guzzling, 2.4-litre normally-aspirated V8s.

Greater energy recovery and storage and significantly improved fuel efficiency will be key features of the new V6s, the BBC reports, with KERS power-boost systems set to double in capacity to 120kw from 2013. Meanwhile, maximum revs will be reduced from 18,000rpm to 12,000rpm, and outright power is set to remain in the region of 750bhp so as not to harm performance. There is also the possibility to develop and introduce even more advanced 'compound' turbos in the years to come.

There will be a series of resource restrictions with a view to keeping costs strictly in-check and ensuring parity between the different manufacturers as much as possible, whilst the development of hybrid technology for road cars is aimed at banishing F1's reputation for wastefulness â€“ fashioned by decades of profligacy and excess â€“ in order to boost its appeal to potential sponsors.

Renault had threatened to withdraw from the sport were the new rules not to come into force, whilst Mercedes stressed that such a wholesale change would not be achievable by 2013 â€“ and it is hoped that today's resolution is something of a happy medium. The WMSC is now expected to ratify the agreed changes to the regulations originally pushed through back in December via a fax vote on Monday.

One interesting point raised by The Daily Telegraph's F1 correspondent Tom Cary before today's reunion was that 'after backing down over the introduction of Pirelli tyres for this season â€“ when he wanted Michelin â€“ and then over Bahrain, Todt's credibility could be seriously undermined if he backs down a third time'. Seemingly, he just has.

I'd not heard of the Audi back-story until now.

Newey: Audi to blame for four-cylinder engine chaos (crash.net)

The whole debate about whether F1 should or should not switch to turbocharged four-cylinder engines in 2013 was prompted by Audi, Adrian Newey has revealed â€“ with the German manufacturer subsequently 'deciding that they won't bother after all, thank you very much' and leaving the existing competitors 'lumbered' with an unwanted powerplant.

Last week, the F1 Commission finally shelved plans to go down the unpopular, 12,000rpm four-cylinder route â€“ following stern objections from the sport's influential commercial rights-holder Bernie Ecclestone and the majority of teams â€“ in favour of delaying the introduction of the new engine formula by a year until 2014, and plumping for noisier, 14,000-16,000rpm V6 units instead. Newey contends that it could all have been so easily avoided.

Red Bull Racing's chief technology officer claims that the FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) announced the four-cylinder plan last December after Audi had hinted that such a move would perhaps be conducive to its joining the grand prix grid â€“ but distinctly mixed signals from the Ingolstadt marque since then, allied to the general tide of opposition, ultimately led to the proposal being abandoned. Newey admits that the dimensions of a V6 engine are much more manageable.

â€œThe initial decision from the engine working group was for a four-cylinder turbo to be introduced for 2013,â€ the Englishman explained. â€œThe big driver behind that was Audi. They said they would come into the sport if there was a four-cylinder turbo, and that's what everyone agreed in order to get Audi in. They subsequently decided that they won't bother after all, thank you very much, and we were lumbered with a four-cylinder turbo.

â€œCertainly from an engineering point-of-view, a four-cylinder turbo is not a nice engine to install â€“ you've basically got to put a space frame around it; you can't make it properly structural. A racing V6 is a much nicer engine to package. That will now be the 2014 engine.â

Exhaust clampdown set to benefit Red Bull (yallaf1.com)

Jun.30 (GMM) Red Bull could lose up to five tenths of a second per lap when the off throttle exhaust blowing clampdown takes effect at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone next weekend.

But team boss Christian Horner has thrown a cat amongst the pigeons by saying on Servus TV that, until now, the Adrian Newey penned RB7 has only been benefitting from â€œcold blowingâ€, not the â€œhotâ€ concept that is so effective when the drivers are off the throttle under braking and in corners.

â€œIn our case, this (effect) happens only with cold air blowing. Other teams blow hot air and get even more benefit,â€ said Horner.

If true, Red Bullâ€™s key rivals might fall even further away from the pace of the dominant RB7 in Britain and beyond.

â€œHow this affects us compared to the others, we will only see at Silverstone. According to our simulation itâ€™s as much as 3 to 5 tenths and perhaps a bit more with some other teams,â€ said Horner.

Former F1 driver Karl Wendlinger said: â€œI believe Red Bullâ€™s superiority will be greater at Silverstone. The (exhaust) system is being banned for all but Adrian Newey is a genius in aerodynamics and this is very important at Silverstone.â€

But McLaren reserve driver Pedro de la Rosa told EFE news that â€œnobody has the foggiest ideaâ€ how precisely the field will line up in Britain.

â€œIt will have a strong impact and the cars will be slower because of the lost downforce,â€ he said.

â€œThere is a ray of hope, as we all know which car was the pioneer of the technique and have been able to maximise the performance better than anyone else,â€ said the Spaniard, presumably referring to Red Bull.

At least Timo Glock is aware of the effect that the clampdown will have on his struggling Virgin Racing MVR-02.
