Here's the Villeneuve - Arnoux battle mentioned above.
As a side note, watching those guys bang into each other on that last lap makes me think modern F1 cars are much more fragile. Maybe if bits didn't break off so easily people wouldn't fly off the handle at every racing incident.

That was a very interesting read, I'm always fascinated by the history of the sport, and why things have developed.
Thanks! -

I think making the cars fragile should actually encourage the drivers to THINK before making a move as it would more than likely end one or more drivers races. I hate the new Indy cars, (the oval safety argument aside) they are ugly and allow way to much contact between cars. To much like NASCRAP..... Drivers just need to race, not just win.

I understand what you are saying Steve, but F1 is the highest level of technology & part of that tech is safety. No way they would ever go with making the cars more fragile.
I'm not keen about the looks of the new Indy cars either, but I'm a huge fan of the added safety provided by that ugly bodywork. -

I absolutely agree that the ever-increasing safety factor is a good thing and I don't think the fragile nature of carbon fiber in an impact makes them safer at all. Seems to me suspension components that shatter on impact actually make them less safe. Makes the cars lighter but it seems to me like an unsafe trade for at least some components. -

I guess I should have said more fragile that they already are.
Yes fragile in some ways, but the tubs are amazingly strong. Shedding parts in a crash dissipates energy keeping it from reaching the driver. The drivers cell remains intact. Carbon-fiber is funny stuff. Incredibly strong in some ways. You see cars take huge hits & look fairly intact. Other times they shed parts like they are held together with a wish & a prayer. Remember the front suspension failing on the Toro Rosso a couple of seasons ago? They build em as light as they can, sometimes too much. -

Safety at 200+ mph at an oval should be different than the 100mph Monaco race tho.....

Apparently Button described the Korea track as "Monza for the first 45 seconds; then a mid high-speed section, then driving around your living room."

Another well written article to recommend over on motorsportmagazine.com:
Most good stories have a baddie
This one is about Grosjean. Here are a couple snips:

Conor was lucky to survive. He was going plenty fast enough to die, yep even at Monaco.

Different kind of crash. Indy cars were changed to try and reduce the car to car incidents on ovals. Been a long time since a driver died on a road course.
Ovals are the real problem with open wheel racing in regards to vehicle safety. -

Maria de Villota, the driver involved in that Marussia test accident early this July, has been back out in public recently. Here's a quick clip from a press conference. Leave it to an F1 driver to come up with an eye patch that matches the jacket. :biggrin5:

Spoilers...
Seeing the RB team become so dominate again is kinda boring.
I know it's a points battle but I do think they should of let Massa play through, he was quicker. Maybe he could of taken some away from Webber. -

Yep they should have let Massa play through. Massa showed he is Fernando's little lap dog today.

Massa has always been the #2 driver, and Alonso will not have a teammate who doesn't clearly know his place......
That's why talk of Vettel going to Ferrari in 2014 doesn't make much sense to me, he's too strong a driver to accept #2 status, and Alonso's not going to have it any other way - it will not work, I promise you.
Red Bull would be foolish to allow Vettel to go to another team, unless they're just tired of winning. Every year he becomes a better and more complete driver. That's not to say there aren;t other excellent drivers out there, but you have only to look at Opie's teammate to see that he's the top choice, and that takes nothing away from Webba.
I haven't watched the race yet so I'll refrain from comments till I do, but my pre-race finish order guess was Vettel, Webbo and then the Hamster.
